Regular Season Round 15: Orlando M. - New York K. 89-99
Date: November 13, 2012
Many Knicks looked up at scoreboard inside the Amway Center on Tuesday night and quickly recognized the anomaly. For the first time this season, they trailed in the fourth quarter, and looked vulnerable against an unlikely opponent, the Orlando Magic, who lost to the Brooklyn Nets by 39 points last week. Jason Kidd, though, reminded his teammates to stay calm. Kidd told Carmelo Anthony and Tyson Chandler to be patient, and the Knicks started to resemble the N.B.A.’s only unbeaten team. In the fourth quarter, they forced seven turnovers, held the Magic to 13 points and escaped with a 99-89 victory. The Knicks’ fifth consecutive win matched their second-best start. They went 5-0 in the 1993-94 season, when they advanced to the N.B.A. finals. “I’ve been through a lot of fourth quarters,” Kidd said. “You can’t panic. You just take your time and try to work for a good shot.” The Knicks, the oldest team in the N.B.A., pointed to their maturity in the fourth quarter. While Anthony scored a game-high 25 points, he was often frustrated on offense. On one sequence his shot was blocked twice in a two-second span. In the fourth quarter, he took only four shots and focused on defense. “He just has to keep fighting,” Coach Mike Woodson said. The Knicks trailed by 53-49 at halftime and had been outrebounded, 25-16. “At halftime, Coach really got on us about our defense,” J. R. Smith said. “We played harder, we got through the screens and we closed out on shots. I think that was the difference.” Smith provided the Knicks with the offense they desperately needed, scoring 21 points (12 in the third quarter) and shooting 9 for 14. He also had 2 steals and 4 rebounds. By playing more aggressively, the Knicks held the Magic to 36 points in the second half. The Knicks have yet to allow an opponent to score more than 40 points in the second half. “We have active hands,” Kidd said. “You have guys who understand where to be on defense. Sometimes it’s not always going to be perfect, but guys were making the second and third effort. That just comes with trust.” The Knicks also benefited from a Magic team that is no longer led by Dwight Howard. He left Orlando for the Los Angeles Lakers, and the Magic are now Jameer Nelson’s team. But he sat out with a groin injury and has missed most of the season. Despite Orlando’s 2-4 record entering the game, Woodson thought the Magic would be competitive. “We can’t take anyone lightly,” he said. “Some records might indicate teams aren’t playing well, but you’re still beatable if you don’t compete.” The biggest concern for the Knicks — and it grows with each game — is their inability to rebound. The Magic outrebounded them by 42-31. Through five games, the Knicks have not outrebounded anyone. “Part of it is positioning on the floor,” Woodson said. “Teams are playing more open-court basketball, so there are a lot of long shots, which makes long rebounds. We have to get in better position when the ball is shot to get the long rebounds.” The Knicks will play back-to-back road games against the San Antonio Spurs and the Memphis Grizzlies, who have rosters that will adequately test the Knicks’ pursuit of perfection. But for one night, the Knicks were glad to hear the encouraging words from Kidd in the fourth quarter. “It’s so great to have a guy like Jason,” Anthony said, “who is so smart and knows to take it one possession at a time.” Courtesy of: nytimes.com
