Regular Season Round 16: Golden St.W. - Atlanta H. 92-88

Date: November 14, 2012
OAKLAND -- Warriors rookie forward Harrison Barnes registered his first career double-double as Golden State held off the injury-plagued Atlanta Hawks 92-88 on Wednesday night. Barnes finished with 19 points and 13 rebounds. He helped the Warriors overcome a rough shooting night from the starting backcourt. Barnes also led Golden State's dominant performance on the boards (44-29). Guards Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson were a combined 6 of 23 from the field with 19 points. Forward David Lee had 18 points, 10 rebounds and five assists. Golden State got 34 points from the bench, led by 10 each from forwards Carl Landry and Richard Jefferson. The Warriors took control of the game in the third quarter. Ahead 55-53, Golden State went on an 8-2 run led by Barnes. He got it going with a dunk. He then capped it with a follow dunk and a turnaround jumper, the latter putting the Warriors ahead 63-55 with just under seven minutes left. By the end of the quarter, the Warriors had their biggest lead of the night. A pull-up jumper by guard Jarrett Jack, followed by a runner from swingman Jefferson sent the Warriors into the fourth quarter up 71-60. Golden State kept a comfortable cushion until late, when the Hawks made a push. A 3-pointer by Hawks guard Lou Williams cut the Warriors' lead to 86-82 with just over a minute left. Curry dropped in a left-hand scoop over Hawks shot-blocking specialist Josh Smith to put the Warriors ahead 88-82 with 55.5 seconds left. But Williams responded by drilling a step-back 3-pointer over Curry. Curry tried to provide the dagger with a step-back 3-pointer of his own, but it clanked off the back rim. Fittingly, Barnes tracked down the rebound. His ensuing free throws put the Warriors up 90-85. Williams hit another 3-pointer, his third down the stretch, with Thompson draped all over him. But Jack knocked down a pair of free throws to seal the victory. The first time Barnes touched the ball in Wednesday's game, he drove baseline and scooped in a reverse layup. The next time he got the ball, he took two dribbles and drilled a pull-up 18-footer. It's exactly what coach Mark Jackson wanted to see. "In the preseason, he was too aggressive. Now, at times, it's like he's waiting," Jackson said before the game. "I'd like to see him score without plays being called for him and be a problem for defenses to match up with him with his energy and effort and all-out pursuit." Barnes said the first couple weeks in his career have been about learning his role. He's the third or fourth option most nights (fifth when center Andrew Bogut is in the lineup), so his opportunities are scarce. Gone are the days when he knew he was getting 15 shots so he could warm himself up. But the Warriors don't want a passive Barnes. At 6-foot-8 and with nice athleticism, he needs to attack the defense. Considering the Warriors' struggles on offense, Barnes' natural scoring ability is becoming more necessary. "You've just got to pick your spots," Barnes said. To help bring the scorer out of Barnes, Jackson has gone to the rookie in the post, taking advantage of his size and skill. Barnes said he went to the post a lot during the team's pre-training camp pickup games, giving Jackson the confidence to add that element to the offense. "He's certainly displayed what we thought he would be, and he's only going to get better," Jackson said. "I'd like him to attack more, run and slash more. He's going to play more, and he's going to be a big part of what we're doing." Perhaps more important than Barnes' offense, Golden State needs him to rebound. With Bogut absent, the Warriors really need their perimeter players to help out on the glass. Crashing the boards has been another difficult adjustment for Barnes, who you would expect to be a decent rebounder. He had just 17 rebounds over his first seven games. Entering Wednesday, Golden State was 3-0 when it wins the battle of the boards, 0-4 when it doesn't. Against Atlanta, Barnes had six rebounds in the first half. "I'm trying to learn how to rebound in the NBA," Barnes said. "In college you just turn around and there's only one or two guys who are as athletic as you. In the pros, everybody's athletic. You actually have to block out." Bogut is headed to Los Angeles to continue rehabbing his surgically repaired left ankle under the supervision of Dr. Richard Ferkel. "Hopefully," Jackson said before the game, "that will speed up his process." Bogut played in four of the first five games. But then he was shut down so he could spend time strengthening his ankle, which he said limited his mobility. Bogut was initially projected to be out seven to 10 days. But the team since has announced that Bogut will not travel on the coming three-game road trip, meaning he will miss at least 12 days and six games. A team source said Golden State is prepared to hold Bogut out through the remainder of 2012 if that's what it takes for him to be healthy. To that end -- while the Warriors are playing at Minnesota, Oklahoma City and Dallas -- Bogut will work under the watchful eye of Ferkel, who performed arthroscopic surgery on Bogut's ankle in April. The latest update from Golden State, via a release, is that there is no timetable for his return to "full-fledged practices or game action." The announcement said Bogut will return to the Bay Area next week "and continue various on-court activities." The Warriors celebrated the Hall of Fame induction of former coach Don Nelson on Wednesday. Nelson and his wife were in attendance. He got an ovation from the crowd, and the Warriors played videos from several NBA legends talking about Nelson. "It was really cool," Nelson said of his induction. "Three days with a lot of your best friends that you haven't seen in a long time that you spent portions of your life with. Family, friends, owners, general managers and basketball people that, over 50 years, you've been touched by them, and by a lot of people, and a lot of them are there. It's pretty special." Nelson, the NBA's all-time winningest coach (1,335 victories), had two stints with the Warriors. He led them to the playoffs during both tenures, the last time was the 2007 "We Believe" team. Nelson is just one of three coaches to win Coach of the Year three times. He said he doesn't have any plans to get back into the NBA. He said he's focused on his business ventures, which include a coffee shop, "stores and rental properties." Nelson said he hasn't even had time to watch the Warriors. "I only saw them one time, and they didn't look that good," Nelson said. "That was up in Sacramento, but they had a chance to win the game. They didn't play very well. I have not seen them, but until they get everyone playing consistently, you're not going to see the real product anyway." Courtesy of: mercurynews.com
