Regular Season Round 18: Memphis G. - New York K. 105-95

Date: November 16, 2012
The Knicks could have used some of the composure and poise Friday night that they showed in coming from behind to beat the Spurs on Thursday. But the Knicks completely lost their cool, lost their way and ultimately lost for the first time this season after starting out with six wins. The Knicks' three-game road trip ended with a 105-95 loss to the Memphis Grizzlies at the FedExForum. The Knicks failed to match the franchise record for most consecutive wins to start a season set by the 1993-94 team, which opened 7-0. One night after their attention-grabbing victory over the Spurs that led Mike Woodson to say, "This team is for real," the Knicks let their emotions get the better of them. There were several questionable calls, but the Knicks were whistled for four technicals and a flagrant foul. Memphis (7-1) took control of the game in the third quarter, using a 19-1 run to build a 77-56 lead with 4:59 left. The Knicks made a charge in the fourth to draw within 93-85 with 4:42 left but could draw no closer. Carmelo Anthony, who had to guard the bigger frontline players of the Grizzlies, was in foul trouble for much of the night. He had 20 points in 31 minutes, five personal fouls and one technical. Raymond Felton scored 18 and Rasheed Wallace had 13 off the bench. Tyson Chandler struggled through a seven-point, seven-rebound, five-foul night. Marc Gasol scored 24 points and was 12-for-13 from the line. Zach Randolph had 20 points and 15 rebounds, including a huge putback with 4:17 remaining that put Memphis up 95-85. Regardless of the outcome, the Knicks believed they solidified what they felt about themselves by coming back from 12 down in the fourth quarter Thursday to beat San Antonio. "I think our guys know that we can play with anybody in this league," Woodson said. "I know it's early, but I think on any given night, you can be beaten if you don't come to play. But our team in particular, there's not a team in this league I don't think we can't play with if we come out committed and ready to go." There definitely was a playoff-type atmosphere in Memphis. The play was physical and the jawing was nonstop. In the second quarter, J.R. Smith elbowed Jerryd Bayless in the chest and Bayless retaliated by pushing the Knicks' sixth man in the chest, leading to double technical fouls. Later in the quarter, Anthony yelled to a fan screaming at him behind the Knicks to sit down. At the same time, Wallace was yelling at the Grizzlies' bench. Wallace had a huge impact on the game with his scoring in the post and his defense. He shot 5-for-7 and scored 10 points in the first half, but the Knicks were beaten badly on the glass. The Grizzlies outrebounded the Knicks by eight and were plus-10 in second-chance points, helping them to a 54-49 halftime lead. Fouls and frustration got the better of the Knicks in the third as Anthony, Wallace and Woodson were hit with technical fouls. Smith was called for a flagrant foul during a third quarter in which everything fell apart for the Knicks. Anthony picked up his fourth foul guarding Gasol in the post, received his technical with 9:05 left and went to the bench with the Knicks down 59-55. In the next 4:06, the Grizzlies outscored the Knicks 18-1 and led by 21 after Tony Allen's three-point play. Courtesy of: newsday.com
