Regular Season Round 23: Dallas M. - New York K. 114-111

Date: November 21, 2012
DALLAS – Forget Linsanity. In their final game before meeting Jeremy Lin for the first time since he left New York, the Knicks were done in by the one-time high flying phenomenon known as Vinsanity. With a little help from Shawn Marion. The Knicks nearly overcame a 12-point fourth quarter deficit only to have Carmelo Anthony, victimized by both Marion and a few unfavorable whistles, missed a potential go-ahead jumper as the Dallas Mavericks held on for a 114-11 victory. Vince Carter scored 14 of his 25 points in the fourth quarter as the Knicks lost for the second time and fell to 8-2. The Mavs, still playing without Dirk Nowitzki, improved to 7-6. Neither team was very interested in defending as the Knicks and Mavs scored 31 and 30 points, respectively, in the fourth. Anthony, defended well by Marion, scored eight of his 23 points in the final period but he misfired on two shots in the last minute to give the Knicks the lead. Tyson Chandler had a huge night with 21 points and 13 rebounds while Raymond Felton added 18 points and 11 assists. Jason Kidd, the former Mavs point guard who upset owner Mark Cuban by backing out of a verbal agreement to return, had 17 points, five steals, six rebounds and five assists. O.J. Mayo led all scorers with 27 points and Darren Collison added 17 for Dallas. Carmelo Anthony reacts after getting hit by Dallas center Chris Kaman on a drive to the hoop. It says something about the Knicks that they managed to score 53 first half points despite Carmelo producing just one field goal. Neither team seemed much interested in defending, except for Shawn Marion who was making things difficult for Anthony. Marion, who was sidelined with an injury when the Mavs visited the Garden two weeks ago, got help when the Knicks threw the ball into the post. Anthony took advantage by passing out of the double team and creating open looks for Felton and Kidd. Still, Marion deserves credit for throwing off Anthony’s rhythm and forcing the rest of the Knicks to make shots. Anthony scored 11 in the third quarter but the Mavs, who had trailed by 10 in the first half, went ahead 84-80 to start the fourth. Anthony began the final period on the bench and returned with the Knicks trailing 90-82 with 9:42 left. Rookie Jae Crowder then hit his second 3-pointer of the quarter to extend the Mavs lead to 11. With the Knicks trailing 95-85, Anthony drove on Dahntay Jones, his former Denver teammate, and drew a foul as he scored. Dallas scored the game’s next five points, including a long three from Carter to make it 100-88. Anthony (l.) leads the Knicks with 23 points. A questionable foul call on Dahntay Jones gave Anthony two free throws and the Knicks eventually closed to 104-98 when Chandler converted a three-point play. Carter drew a shooting foul on Kidd but converted just one free throw. For the second straight possession, Felton found Chandler in the lane the former Mavs center fought through the contact and was fouled as his shot bounced in. With Dallas coach Rick Carlisle instructing Carter to drift into the corner, Darren Collison found Carter who drained a three to make it 108-101 with 3:44 to play. Felton’s driving lay-up made it a five-point game and the Knicks failed to draw closer when Anthony was called for a questionable charge. Marion drew contract but he appeared to foul Anthony as Anthony made wild running lay-up as he was falling down. It was a pivotal moment because Collison answered with two free throws with 2:14 to play. Out of timeout, Anthony hit a pull up three only to have Carter answer with a long jumper. O.J. Mayo (r.), who is defended by Jason Kidd here, gets a game-high 27 points. Chandler’s third three-point play of the period made it 112-109 and after Kidd forced Carter into a tough shot the veteran point guard grabbed the rebound and was fouled. Kidd sank both with 1:15 to play and the Knicks regained possession when Chris Kaman butchered a lay-up. Anthony wanted the ball with a chance to give the Knicks the lead and missed on a drive as he took a shot in the mouth from Kaman. No foul was called and although Dallas played 5-on-4 for most of their possession it ended with Collison shooting an air ball with 24 seconds left. Woodson ran a play for Anthony, coming off a high screen. He was isolated on the wing against Marion but his pull-up jumper fell short. Dahntay Jones grabbed the rebound and was fouled by Anthony, his sixth. Jones made both with 3.3 seconds and with the Knicks, having used up their timeouts, had to settle for halfcourt heave from Raymond Felton at the buzzer. Courtesy of: nydailynews.com
