Regular Season Round 32: Houston R. - Utah Jazz 124-116

Date: December 1, 2012
The Rockets did not need a lot of defense, not the way their offense was rolling, but they did need a minute or two spent stopping the Jazz. The Rockets could score wildly, shooting as well as they have in a game all season and repeatedly scoring in threes, whether by shooting from beyond the arc or with six three-point plays. They could not put away the Jazz, however, until they mixed in just a few minutes of defense. When Patrick Patterson blocked consecutive shots and Omer Asik swatted another, the Rockets had their stops. Down the stretch, Patterson hit a corner 3, Jeremy Lin finished consecutive drives and Asik added a three-point play with blood gushing as the Rockets pulled away from the Jazz, 124-116, Saturday at Toyota Center. The Rockets had seven players score at least 13 points, and shot a season-best 55.4 from the floor. Patterson led the Rockets with 20 points, Lin added 19 with eight assists. Chandler Parsons capped the late surge with a 3-pointer to give him 19. With the Rockets’ return home, the offense was back in gear from the start, at least when the Rockets did not get in their own way early in the game. The Rockets hit 6 of 18 shots in the first quarter, enough to come back from a nine-point deficit to a 28-28 tie, but also enough to know that they could have scored much more if they had taken care of the ball. The Rockets committed seven mostly unforced turnovers in the first eight minutes, keeping them from taken advantage of an offense on the roll. When they began taking care of the ball in the second quarter, they repeatedly found Omer Asik cutting to the rim and got a jolt of scoring from Parsons, who scored 10 of his 13 first-half points in the second quarter. James Harden mixed in a powerful jam over Gordon Hayward and Lin added a corner and the Rockets led by as much as 10 late in the half. The Rockets, however, had approached the night as a defense-optional game. That allowed the Jazz to open the game getting good looks on their way to a nine-point lead. The Rockets opened the second half the same way, allowing Utah to move the ball to the same open looks that had built the early lead. This time, it erased a 10-point Rockets lead, and when Randy Foye ended the third quarter with a 3-pointer, the Jazz led, 86-85. With 5:40 remaining, the Rockets led by one, but had four-consecutive awful possessions as Rockets head coach went to a time out. That was enough to get a flurry of defense, and that was enough for the Rockets offense to take it from there. Courtesy of: chron.com
