CHARLOTTE, N.C. — J.R. Smith hit an 18-foot jumper at the buzzer to give the New York Knicks a 100-98 victory over the Charlotte Bobcats on Wednesday night. Smith’s buzzer-beater came after the Knicks inbounded with 3.4 seconds remaining. They went directly to Smith, and he nailed a fallaway over the outstretched arms of Michael Kidd-Gilchrist. The basket capped a comeback after the Knicks trailed by eight with 3:50 left. They outscored the Bobcats 8-0 the rest of the way, holding the Bobcats scoreless on their last seven possessions. Smith also had a key steal on the Bobcats’ last possession to set up the game-winner. The win was the Knicks’ fourth in a row and moved them to an Eastern Conference-best 13-4. The Bobcats fell to 7-19 and lost their fifth consecutive game. Carmelo Anthony led the Knicks with 23 points but scored only three in the second half and was not on the court for the final play. Tyson Chandler scored 18 with 17 rebounds, and Raymond Felton scored 17. Smith finished with 13. Jason Kidd returned after missing four games with lower back spasms and had seven points in 25 minutes. Kemba Walker led the Bobcats with 25 points. Gerald Henderson scored 18, Ben Gordon 17 and Kidd-Gilchrist 12. NOTES: The Knicks played without Marcus Camby, who missed his second consecutive game with a sore left foot, and they continue to be without Iman Shumpert (torn left ACL) and Amar’e Stoudemire (left knee debridement). … The Bobcats were without Tyrus Thomas (left calf strain). … The Knicks were coming off a 106-99 win over Phoenix on Sunday, and they beat Washington and Milwaukee during their winning streak. … Anthony’s 34 points Sunday marked the fifth time this season he has scored 30 or more. He did it 14 times last season. … Anthony was second in the NBA in scoring coming into the game at 26.6 points per game. Kobe Bryant led the league at 27.9 ppg. … The visit to Charlotte marked the start of a three-game road trip for the Knicks. They will play at Miami on Thursday and at Chicago on Saturday. … The Bobcats closed out a three-game homestand. They’ll play at Milwaukee on Friday. … The Bobcats had lost at Oklahoma City, at Atlanta and to Philadelphia and Portland during their skid. They blew an 18-point lead in the final six minutes in their 118-112 overtime loss to the Trail Blazers on Monday. … Gordon’s 29 points against Portland allowed him to surpass 10,000 points in his career. He set a Bobcats franchise record with eight 3-pointers in the game. … Chandler came into the game leading the NBA in field-goal percentage at .713. … Walker led the Bobcats in scoring coming into the game at 16.6 ppg and was fourth in the league in steals at 2.13 per game.
