Regular Season Round 39: Houston R. - Dallas M. 109-116

Date: December 8, 2012
On the surface it looked like bad timing by the Mavericks Saturday night. The Houston Rockets were on an emotional high with their coach, Kevin McHale, on the bench for the first time since his daughter died last month. The Rockets also were a remarkable 24-2 at the Toyota Center in the month of December since 2008. The Mavericks answered all that with a shrug and an avalanche of points by O.J. Mayo as they capped a gutsy 2-1 road trip with a 116-109 victory over the Rockets. Mayo, locked in a big-time scoring duel with the Rockets’ James Harden, poured in 40 points, including a key jumper with 1:17 to play and an absolute dagger of a 3-pointer with 38.4 left that put the Mavericks up 112-107. The Mavericks had trailed 98-89 but chipped away behind Mayo, Vince Carter and Co. They scored six consecutive points, the last two on a Brandan Wright slam, to go ahead 102-100. After a Chandler Parsons free throw, the Mavericks got two free throws and a 3-pointer from Mayo to make it 107-101. Harden, who had 39 points, converted a three-point play, but Mayo scored again from 18 feet. After Toney Douglas made a 3-pointer, Mayo took the ball with the shot clock set to expire and drilled a 3-pointer for a 112-107 advantage. The Rockets scored, but Mayo quickly split the Houston defense and scored on a layup with 21.2 to go to make it 114-109 and clinch things. Courtesy of: dallasnews.com
