Regular Season Round 9: Tulsa 66ers - Rio Grande VV 109-98
Date: December 8, 2012
Tulsa 66ers head coach Darko Rajakovic preaches the importance of teamwork to his players. The concept of everyone playing a role in Tulsa's success was on display against the Rio Grande Valley Vipers in NBA Development League action Saturday at the SpiritBank Event Center. Dominique Sutton had 21 points and 10 rebounds and Oklahoma City Thunder assignee Reggie Jackson added 20 points and 11 assists as the 66ers snapped a two-game losing streak with a 109-98 win. Sutton and Jackson were two of five 66ers who scored in double figures, including Andy Rautins, who came off the bench to drain a season-high six 3-pointers for 18 points. Thunder assignee Daniel Orton powered his way inside to 18 points and three blocked shots. "This is a young team and we want to play within the Oklahoma City Thunder system, and that means sharing the ball and playing like a team," Rajokovic said. "Our players are working hard and focusing on the small details, and that is paying off for us." In a game that saw 13 lead changes and 13 ties, Tulsa (4-2) finally took control of the contest in the third quarter, finishing the period with a 17-8 spurt to take an 84-75 lead into the final stanza. Sutton played a big role in making sure the Vipers did not rally from that deficit, scoring eight of his 21 points in the fourth quarter, including back-to-back baskets that pushed the 66er lead to its largest point of the night, 97-81 with 5:44 remaining. "Dominique is our motor on the defensive end," Rajakovic said of Tulsa's first-round draft choice who had his second consecutive game with 20 or more points. "He brings a lot of energy and we are looking for extra plays for him to get him more involved in the offense." Rio Grande Valley (2-4) pulled within 97-91 on a free throw by Chris Johnson with 2:39 left, but Jackson answered with consecutive baskets to force a Viper timeout with 1:51 left and Tulsa holding a 101-91 edge. Tulsa and Rio Grande Valley will meet again at 4 p.m. on Sunday at the SpiritBank Event Center, marking the third meeting between the squads in a four-day span. Courtesy of: tulsaworld.com
