Regular Season Round 12: Windsor Exp. - Moncton M. 102-98

Date: December 14, 2012
Chris Commons has turned a negative into a positive and that's good news for the Windsor Express. Cut by his pro team in Finland, Commons landed in Windsor and was instrumental in leading the Express to a 10298 victory over the Moncton Miracles Friday before a crowd of 300 at the WFCU Centre. Now three games into his National Basketball League of Canada career, Commons has proven he can score and defend in this league. He had 22 points and seven rebounds against Moncton and, along with fellow front-liners in Lester Prosper and Daniel Rose, they shared the unenviable task of trying to defend Moncton post Isaac Butts. At six-foot-10 and 300 pounds, Butts simply imposed his will in the low post, shoving the Express' forwards around until he tired in the fourth. "Coach said to come out in the second half and play a little bit harder because they were on a back-to-back and maybe they would wear down a little," said Commons, who scored 16 of his 22 points in the second half. Having played the night before in London, the Miracles hung tough against the Express despite falling behind by as many as 15 early in the fourth. They clawed that back to just six at 96-90 with 50 seconds to play but the Express closed out the victory from the free-throw line. "We missed a lot of free throws," Moncton coach Ricky Benitez said. "That was the difference in the game." The Miracles, who fell to 8-8 in the Atlantic Conference, made only 13 of 25 from the foul line and that proved to be a weakness in Butts' game. He missed seven straight before hitting three of his last four. The Express pushed their Central Division record to 5-7 with the win. Guard Darren Duncan also scored 22 points. Mike Helms had 13 points and Anthony Johnson chipped in 10. Kevin Loiselle scored nine points and added as many rebounds. Butts finished with 19 points. Darrell Wonge also had 19 for Moncton while Mikhail Torrance and Devin Sweetney scored 18 apiece. The two teams traded baskets through the first half, with Windsor owning a 24-22 edge but clearly facing a tough challenge in Butts. "We had to stop the big fellow on the pick and rolls," Commons said. Moncton has now lost four straight. "It was a hard fought win," Windsor coach Bill Jones said. "Moncton is the second best team in the league. "We got them on a back-to-back and they were a little tired in the fourth quarter." The Express had to juggle their rotation with the loss of forward Greg Surmacz to a broken wrist. The former Windsor Lancer was injured in a game last weekend and will be sidelined until the end of January. Courtesy of: canada.com
