NBA
Regular Season Round 45: Denver N. - Memphis G. 99-94
Date: December 14, 2012
For far too long, judging by the frustrated body language of coach George Karl, the Nuggets seemed to view potential victory Friday night with a strange indifference. Beset by turnovers and dealing with periods of sloppiness, the Nuggets appeared to be in real danger of dropping a home game to a tough Memphis Grizzlies squad at the Pepsi Center. Fact is, they were in real danger all night, but the Nuggets found life at the end to squeak out a 99-94 victory. Andre Miller's two free throws with 10.2 seconds left, which increased a one-point lead to three, and two big baskets by Andre Iguodala shortly before that helped get Denver back to the .500 mark at 12-12. The Nuggets trailed 55-51 with 6:19 left in the third, their game to that point consisting of the occasional run of sustained quality. Otherwise, it was turnover city. To that point, they had committed 14 turnovers, resulting in 17 Grizzlies points. Karl called a timeout to demand better of his troops, and then on the ensuing possession JaVale McGee threw the ball right to a Grizzlie from the top of the key. All Karl could do was punch the air in frustration. But the Nuggets hung in there. Danilo Gallinari, waking from a game-long slumber, hit a 3-pointer to give Denver an 87-85 lead, one of many lead changes in the second half. After Gallinari hit two free throws to make it 89-87, Ty Lawson made two more. Finally, leading 91-87, the Nuggets had just a hint of separation from Memphis. Marc Gasol's two free throws cut it back to two, but that's when Iguodala made his two big plays. He put in a tough, left-handed reverse layup to move the lead up to four again. Then he dunked off the breakaway, following a steal and lead pass from Lawson. Rudy Gay had a chance to tie it for the Grizzlies with less than 10 seconds left, but his 3-point attempt went in and out, with Denver rebounding. Miller then finished off the Grizzlies by making two more free throws for the final margin. Courtesy of: denverpost.com
