Regular Season Round 46: Detroit P. - Indiana P. 77-88

Date: December 15, 2012
Their starting center went to the locker room late in the first half and didn’t return. Their starting power forward was saddled with foul trouble and spent half of the third quarter on the bench. That meant Indiana Pacers coach Frank Vogel had no choice but to use his bench and play starters George Hill and Paul George heavy minutes in the second half. Whatever it took to keep the streak going. The Pacers overcame those obstacles to beat the struggling Detroit Pistons 88-77 at the Palace of Auburn Hills on Saturday. “Everybody just did their part,” said Pacers power forward David West, who battled foul trouble. “We knew this was going to be a scrappy, tough game. Detroit is a physical team that likes to junk the game up. But we were able to make plays when we needed to.” The Pacers have routinely had one or two players step up for them each game this season. But Saturday’s victory was classified as a team victory because of the number of players who did their part. Vogel referred to it as the “best performance of the year in terms of complete team effort.” The Pacers lost center Roy Hibbert, their anchor in the middle defensively, with 53.5 seconds left in the first half. Hibbert came over from the weak side to contest Pistons center Greg Monroe’s shot. Monroe’s knee hit Hibbert’s left thigh. Hibbert went to the floor in obvious pain before making his way to the locker room. There was some thought Hibbert might return in the second half, but that ended when it was determined he couldn’t run full speed because of the thigh bruise. “If I would have went back out there, I would have hampered the team,” he said. “I didn’t want to do that.” The Pacers are optimistic Hibbert will be ready for Tuesday’s game at Milwaukee. That was just the start of Indiana’s problems. West, the heart and soul of the team, picked up his fourth foul barely halfway through the third quarter, causing him to head to the bench. That meant Vogel had to utilize the players on a bench that has struggled this season. No problem. Jeff Pendergraph, whose minutes have been limited this season, started the second half at center. He played a solid 8 minutes, recording two points, three rebounds and a block. Tyler Hansbrough scored 11 points and grabbed six rebounds off the bench. “It felt pretty good to be out there,” Pendergraph said. “The circumstances why I ended up out there sucked because you never want to see a player go down with an injury. I just wanted to provide good energy, defend and rebound.” West returned to the game about 4 minutes into the fourth quarter with the Pacers holding onto a two-point lead. That’s when he took it over. He scored 13 of his 23 points on 6-of-7 shooting during his 8 fourth-quarter minutes. West punctuated his night with a dunk — and stare-down — on Pistons rookie center Andre Drummond to give the Pacers a 13-point lead with 31 seconds remaining in the game. With a chance to get their first three-game winning streak of the season, Vogel played Hill (18 points) and George all but 59 seconds of the second half. The decision paid off for Vogel and the Pacers. “We’ve been playing well,” said George, who finished with 15 points. “It’s not a matter of who we’re playing. We’re just starting to click and play better basketball.” Courtesy of: indystar.com
