Regular Season Round 53: Washington W. - Detroit P. 87-96

Date: December 22, 2012
WASHINGTON -- The Detroit Pistons peeked at their holiday gifts a few days early. What they found was the Washington Wizards. The Pistons put together their second two-game win streak of the season, with both victories at the expense of the NBA-worst Wizards, on consecutive nights, concluding with Saturday's 96-87 win at Verizon Center. The Pistons (9-21) jumped to a 12-2 lead for the second consecutive night as the Wizards made one of their first 15 field-goal attempts. Washington (3-22) also had three turnovers and a technical foul during that span. And for the second consecutive night, the Pistons never trailed. Charlie Villanueva equaled his season-high with 19 points and also had a season-high seven rebounds for the Pistons. The Wizards made a third-quarter run after trailing by 19 at halftime and drew as close as 64-58, before a 10-2 run in which Villanueva and Stuckey combined for eight points. The Wizards also got within seven points in the fourth quarter, but no closer. HIGHLIGHTS --The Pistons' 54-35 halftime lead equaled their largest of the season at intermission. They also led Friday's win over the Wizards by 19 points at halftime. --Stuckey had assists on all four field goals during a key 11-2 Pistons run to push the lead to 41-24 in the second quarter. He finished with eight assists to go with his 18 points. --The Pistons get their first three-game break of the season Sunday through Tuesday. They will travel to Atlanta on Christmas evening for a Dec. 26 game before returning home for five consecutive games. LOWLIGHTS --Tayshaun Prince suffered a high right ankle sprain when he landed on Nene's foot with 9:53 left in the third quarter. Prince shot his free throws so he could return to the game if able, made one of two, then left and never returned. --Brandon Knight, Greg MOnroe and Jason Maxiell all had four fouls in the first three quarters and played limited minutes in the fourth quarter because of it. ISSUE OF THE DAY: FINAL VERDICT There just isn't much fight in the Wizards, who had four players out with injuries and completely lack direction. Their NBA-worst record is no fluke.
