Regular Season Round 15: London L. - Montreal J. 105-84
Date: December 22, 2012
When a team is 14-1, you know it has had a lot of good nights. But Saturday was an especially good one for the London Lightning. It wasn’t just the fact the National Basketball League of Canada team ran its record to 14-1 with a 105-84 win over the Montreal Jazz in front of 2,792 at the Gardens. That was pretty good. It wasn’t the fact they got good news earlier in the day when they found out starting forward Morgan Lewis did not have any significant knee damage. He will be out for a month but it could have been a lot worse. It was one of those feel-good wins for the Lightning. The Big Show came back Saturday night and played like he belonged as part of the big show. De’Andre Thomas was moved off the inactive reserve list to replace Lewis after being on it for about two weeks. His return gave the pre-Christmas crowd plenty of cheer. Thomas, a few pounds lighter in the body and a little more settled in the head, was the show. Not that he was the top guy out there but from the moment Lightning coach Michael Ray Richardson brought him off the bench, it lifted The Gardens’ crowd out of their seats. He gave them what they wanted. The Lightning were never in trouble of losing to the 0-13 Jazz but Thomas made the night enjoyable for all. “He has no idea how good he can be,” said Richardson. In an effort to help the 6’8” 325 pounder realize his potential, the Lightning tried shock treatment. They placed Thomas on the inactive reserve list until he got into better shape mentally and physically. One game does not a story tell but his first game back filling a roster spot for injured Morgan Lewis was a good start. Thomas had 10 points, two blocks and two steals along with five assists. That’s a testament to how soft his hands are for a big man. The crowd loves him. They gave him a big ovation when he came on the floor, when he hit his first basket, when he made his first big defensive play. The more he played, the more confident he got. His passing was almost guard-like as he whipped passes around to cutting teammates after getting the ball down low. Thomas put the sizzle on his performance when he made a ballet-like spin move around a Jazz defender and laid the ball in the hole. The Lightning have Thomas working with a trainer and with a naturopath doctor. Thomas said the time off helped him mature. “It made me appreciate the game a little more and my teammates,” Thomas said. “It just made me want to play harder. You never want to sit out. You go through training camp. You go through battle with all these guys . . . But I had to work on me. I let the team down. I had to get my mental right and my physical right to be a better player and a better person." Now everyone is waiting to see whether he can do it for more than just one night. But there was more to the night than just Thomas. The Lightning have been trying to find more floor time for Canadian Osvaldo Jeanty. The five time CIS champ with Carleton Ravens can play but with so many Lightning players who can play guard, it’s hard to find him time. Richardson found him the time and he responded. Jeanty is one of those guys who’s intensity meter is always in the red. He doesn’t let up for a second. Saturday Jeanty got 17 minutes, played strong defence and added eight points, including two baskets from three-point range. It was a nice bonus for the Lightning. A lot of people got into the act for the Lightning yet again. Rodney Buford had another good shooting night, hitting for 22 including 6-of-9 from three-point land. Tim Ellis added 19, Jermaine Blackburn 14, Jeremy Williams and DeAnthony Bowden had 11 each. Juan Mendez had 22 for the Jazz with Chris Hagan adding 15. When it was all over it turned out to be another great night at the game for the Lightning and their fans to take in The Big Show. They left, hoping to see an encore. Courtesy of: lfpress.com/
