Regular Season Round 54: New York K. - Minnesota T. 94-91

Date: December 23, 2012
Carmelo Anthony wasn’t saying bah humbug to Christmas but when your jumper is off, your legs are dead and your team is down it is hard to find inspiration in “It’s Beginning to Look A lot Like Christmas.” “I love Christmas music,” Anthony said. “But at that time of the game we were down. We didn’t have energy and then they threw out chestnuts roasting on an open fire.” In the Knicks’ last home game of 2012, the organization played Christmas music during timeouts and at halftime. It was a festive atmosphere but not a typical NBA environment until Anthony singlehandedly seized the moment in the fourth quarter. This was Anthony’s Christmas present to Knicks fans: he scored 19 of his game-high 33 points in the fourth as the Knicks rallied to defeat the Minnesota Timberwolves, 94-91, on Sunday. One game after sitting out the final seven minutes of a loss to the Chicago Bulls, Anthony proved that he is much better and much more exciting when he’s taking over the fourth quarter as opposed to just watching it from the locker room. Derek Jeter knows winning teams. The Yankee captain sees the Knicks win Sunday. “It was an MVP performance at the end,” Mike Woodson said after the Knicks improved to 20-7 and avoided consecutive home losses for the first time since he became head coach last March. Woodson was also ejected on Friday and committed another cardinal sin on Sunday by picking up a fourth-quarter technical. It occurred during a crucial moment of the game with the Knicks trailing 85-82 with 3:04 remaining and Anthony being called for his fifth foul. It was a questionable whistle as Anthony was charged with holding Wolves center Nikola Pekovic on a rebound. Anthony was clearly upset but unlike Friday, he kept control of his emotions and avoided another technical. “It is what it is,” Anthony said of the foul. “It was just a matter of me keeping my composure.” Luke Ridnour’s free throw made it 86-82 but after Ridnour missed an open three from the corner, Anthony hit a three in transition, and on the Knicks’ ensuing possession Anthony spun past Andrei Kirilenko for a lay-up and was fouled. As the crowd erupted, Anthony let out a primal scream that wasn’t very Christmas-like. His three-point play with 1:13 made it 88-86 and after the Wolves missed three shots on one possession, Anthony’s two free throws with 31 seconds left extended the lead to four. In the fourth quarter, Anthony made five of eight shots and eight of nine free throws. “We are going to him down the stretch,” Tyson Chandler said before the Knicks departed for Los Angeles for their Christmas Day game against the Lakers. “Teams know it. We know it and he is still able to perform.” J.R. Smith added 19 points, Raymond Felton 15 and Chandler scored 16 despite being outplayed by Pekovic, the underrated Wolves center. Pekovic has soft hand and, as the saying goes, is “strong like a bull.” He finished with 21 points and 17 rebounds for Minnesota, which was playing without Kevin Love (eye) and fell to 13-12. Alexey Shved added 18 points while Ricky Rubio had five points and five turnovers in his Garden debut. The Knicks overcame an 11-point third-quarter deficit despite two starters, Jason Kidd and Ronnie Brewer, failing to score. One contributing factor was free throws. The Knicks took 12 in the third quarter en route to 21 in the second half compared to four for the Wolves. In fact, Pekovic took eight free throws in the first half and none in the second. Maybe the refs and the Wolves were put in a trance by the Christmas carols. More likely, they were done in by Anthony, who on this night performed like St. Knick. Marcus Camby, and not Amar’e Stoudemire, is the forward who will be back for Christmas. Camby revealed on Sunday that he will be available on Christmas Day when the Knicks face the Lakers in L.A. Camby has missed 12 games with plantar fascia in his left foot. The veteran center has appeared in just six games this season and has yet to score a field goal. “It’s been frustrating,” said Camby. “I’ve been a starter the majority of my career. Coming here and not really getting an opportunity because of my calf in the preseason and things of that nature. . . But at this point in my career, I’m not asking for a lot of big minutes. Our depth that we have on this team enables me to do that.” Stoudemire, who has yet to make his season debut, will travel with the club on the West Coast trip but is not expected to play. Woodson reiterated that he wants Stoudemire to practice with the team first. Courtesy of: www.nydailynews.com
