Regular Season Round 19: Sioux Falls S. - Iowa E. 80-102
Date: December 25, 2012
The Iowa Energy spoiled the holiday festivities for Sioux Falls fans on Christmas night, dispatching the Skyforce with relative ease in a 102-80 win before an Arena crowd of 3,480. The loss dropped the Skyforce to 7-4 on the season and 12-11 all-time on Christmas night, and turnovers were the glaringly obvious culprit. That and a 34-point, 11-rebound effort from Iowa’s Paul Harris. The Skyforce turned it over 22 times and scored just 29 second-half points to finish with a season-low 80, which clearly took coach Joel Abelson out of the holiday spirit. “Turnovers, toughness, following the gameplan, getting outplayed on our home court, letting a guy get 34 on us,” Abelson recited while slumped in a chair in the locker room. “There were myriad of issues out there.” Indeed, the turnovers only told part of the story. While the Force shot 49 percent (to 48 for Iowa) they were just 2-for-19 from beyond the arc, and just 6-of-14 at the line. They looked flat from the get-go and never made a serious threat to fight back. Meanwhile, the Energy (3-7) looked nothing like a last-place team, with all five starters reaching double figures (and scoring 90 of the team’s points). Harris, a 6-foot-4 swingman from Syracuse, was 14-for-22 from the floor. Iowa had 25 assists and just 10 turnovers. “We were hungry for a win,” said Energy coach Kevin Young. “We talked to the guys about the need to share the ball, and we had 25 assists and 10 turnovers. That was the key to the game.” Sioux Falls trailed virtually the whole way, as a sloppy first quarter put it in catch-up mode, and a dreadful third quarter ensured it would come up short. The Skyforce outshot Iowa 53 percent to 44 percent in the first quarter, but seven turnovers (to none for Iowa) left them trailing by six. They continued their hot shooting and corrected the turnover issues in the second to pull within four at half, but things fell apart in the third, with the Energy going up by as much as 20, again with help from 10 third quarter turnovers by the Skyforce. That made diagnosing the Force’s woes easy. In the second quarter, when they turned it over just once, they scored 32 points. In the first and third, when they combined for 17 turnovers, they combined for just 33 points. “I don’t think it was effort,” Abelson said. “I think we’re focusing on the wrong things some nights, and it all kind of came to a head tonight. We couldn’t find a rhythm. It was very disjointed. It’s got to be about what we do as a group and not as individuals.” Mark Tyndale led the Force with 19 points on 9-of-13 shooting, while Hassan Whiteside had 17 points (on 8-of-11 shooting) and 15 rebounds in just 22 minutes off the bench. Center Arnett Moultrie, in his second game since being assigned to Sioux Falls from the 76ers, had 13 points but just one rebound. Young seemed downright giddy that his struggling team had come in to the Arena and upset Sioux Falls, while the Skyforce seemed embarrassed they had allowed it to happen. They played like a team that would rather have had other plans for Christmas. “It was Christmas for Iowa, too,” Abelson frowned. “And they came out and took it to us from the jump.” Courtesy of: argusleader.com
