Regular Season Round 56: Denver N. - LA Lakers 126-114
Date: December 26, 2012
It would've been a fine idea for Dwight Howard's Lakers teammates to send a message to Howard about how they need guys — whether they are future franchise centerpieces or not — to come back and win in Denver without him Wednesday night. They couldn't, though, and a big reason was Howard's lethargy early on and then his ejection for a type-two flagrant foul to Kenneth Faried's face in the third quarter. The Nuggets won, 126-114, as the defense and rebounding — the centerpieces of Howard's game — disappointed the Lakers to end their five-game winning streak. Lakers center Dwight Howard loses control of the ball against the defense of Kosta Koufos in the Lakers' 126-114 loss in Denver on Wednesday. Unlike the previous two games against Golden State and New York, Howard couldn't redeem a sluggish start with some key second-half plays. Howard had 12 points, seven rebounds and one block in 27 minutes before his ejection with 5:02 left in the third quarter. Just before the foul, Howard had gone out to contest Andre Iguodala's 3-point shot and no Laker competed with Faried for a long rebound. Howard has been disappointed often this season when teammates haven't covered for him and helped enough on defense. The Lakers' energy improved in the first half when Howard went out and Jordan Hill went in, but it went down again when Steve Nash went to rest. In the second half, the Lakers were regularly unable to compete at Denver's level, though Kobe Bryant (40 points) scored at least 30 points for the 10th consecutive game.
