Regular Season Round 20: Iowa E. - Los Angeles D. 104-100

Date: December 28, 2012
Paul Harris has been logging heavy minutes in the pool at the downtown YMCA in Des Moines, shedding 14 pounds in the process. On Friday, he was a shark in the water for the Iowa Energy, constantly corralling the basketball in the teeth of the Los Angeles D-Fenders’ defense. He had 30 points, 18 rebounds and the biggest play of the game to will Iowa to a 104-100 victory before an announced crowd of 4,098 at Wells Fargo Arena. Inspired by Harris, the Energy (4-7) had erased an 18-point deficit and were staring at the last of 15 tie scores, 100-100 with 30 seconds remaining. The D-Fenders (5-5) were on the verge of committing an over-and-back violation, and point guard Courtney Fortson was watching the ball bouncing in his backcourt, knowing as soon as he touched it, the whistle would blow. He never got the chance. Harris blew past him, scooped up the ball and burst in for a dunk that proved to be the winning points. “I saw the ball and I saw him jogging like it was nothing,” Harris said. “And I said, ‘I can get this.’ I just went and grabbed it and luckily I got it. I thought he tried to foul me, but I just kept going and got a dunk.” Said Energy coach Kevin Young: “What, are you going to draw that up? The guy just made a play, because he’s got a big heart.” Harris stands just 6-foot-4 and came to Iowa on Dec. 5 weighing 238 pounds. He quickly got a YMCA membership and became a daily visitor to its pool and sauna, got some extra sprinting in after Energy practices, and slimmed down to 224. The lost weight gave him some extra spring in his legs, but still doesn’t account for how a 6-4 guard can end up with 18 rebounds, eight of them offensive. “Paul Harris is just a big ball of energy, and we feed off of that,” said Energy forward Morris Almond, who finished with 27 points, including the two free throws that sealed the win. “It’s the fourth quarter, everyone’s legs are a little tired, and he’s out there, pure adrenaline. You see that, you can’t help but respond.” Almond and Harris were teammates in Maine last year. Almond came to Iowa on Dec. 12 in a trade, and the NBA Development League veteran quickly established himself as the most versatile scorer on the team. On Friday, he kick-started his offense by hitting an open 3-pointer from the top of the key in the second quarter. Soon, he was driving to the basket from both wings, getting to the rim or pulling up for a soft floater. It was a performance Young has been accustomed to seeing ever since he used to referee Almond’s summer-league games in their shared hometown in the northern suburbs of Atlanta. “He’s a bona fide 25 points-a-night guy. We needed that on the wing,” Young said. “He’s not a sexy scorer per se, but he finds a way. He just knows how to play the game when he doesn’t have the ball in his hands and then when he does, he’s decisive.” The same teams meet again at 7 p.m. today at Wells Fargo Arena.
