Regular Season Round 58: Sacramento K. - New York K. 106-105

Date: December 28, 2012
Two nights ago, the Knicks lived by a buzzer-beater. Friday night, they died by one. James Johnson’s 3-pointer from the top of the arc as time expired sank the Knicks, 106-105, at Sleep Train Arena, killing a rally from a 27-point first-half deficit by Mike Woodson’s club. “We fight,” Woodson said. “We buried ourselves in the first two quarters and then decided to defend. They made the shot. A two couldn’t kill you. Only a three. It’s a game of inches. We were able to get control and the lead back. They made the big shot at the end.” The Knicks were forced to go without leading scorer Carmelo Anthony for a second straight game because the hyperextended left knee he suffered Tuesday against the Lakers was still swollen and painful. Playing without him and starting point guard Raymond Felton, who broke his pinkie on Tuesday, didn’t catch up with the Knicks on Wednesday when they won in Phoenix on J.R. Smth’s baseline jumper at the buzzer, but the absences may have been a factor in Sacramento. The Knicks nearly pulled off the biggest comeback in their history. They were down by 27 in the second quarter, 68-41, but relentlessly thrived at both ends of the court through a scintillating second half. In the 20 years the stat has been kept, the Knicks’? biggest rally was overcoming a 26-point deficit to defeat Milwaukee on March 14, 2004. A 31-point third quarter headed by 13 points from Smith cut a 24-point halftime deficit to 87-81 and the Knicks (21-9) drew even for the first time when Smith sank a jumper with about seven minutes left to make it 93-93 and a second time on an alley-oop from Jason Kidd to Tyson Chandler for a 95-95 tie with 6:22 left. Kidd put the Knicks up with a jumper at the top of the key with six minutes to go. But later, Isaiah Thomas made two free throws to narrow the Knicks’ edge to 105-103 with 33 seconds left. On the ensuing Knicks possession, Kidd’s alley-oop attempt to Chandler was deflected and stolen. Thomas missed a bank shot short from the left side, but Sacramento (10-19) got the offensive rebound. The winning basket didn’t come out of a set play but rather via hitting an open man in Johnson, who had been 0-for-11 from three on the season before his game-winning shot. “We shouldn’t have out ourselves in that position,” Kidd said. “I had Tyson wide open and I made the turnover. It was just a bad pass.” Smith had a season-high 28 points, Chris Copeland had 23 and Chandler added 21 and 18 rebounds for the Knicks. Marcus Thornton scored 18 points and Johnson had 17 for the Kings. Anthony’s injury looms over the Knicks. He was still walking gingerly when the team left its morning shootaround. And he couldn’t say with any certainty whether he would be able to return for the Knicks’ next game, on Tuesday against Portland at the Garden, or whether he would miss his third straight game and seventh of the season. “I haven’t figured that out,” Anthony said. “It’s getting better. Today felt much better than it did yesterday. Yesterday I was barely able to bend my knee. Today I am walking much better.” Anthony said that team medical staff has done two manual examinations of the joint and that there is no structural damage. He has not had an MRI exam. Anthony was injured in Tuesday’s loss to the Lakers when Marcus Camby was fouled going to the basket, hit the ground and rolled into Anthony’s knee. Courtesy of: nydailynews.com
