Regular Season Round 17: Halifax R. - Montreal J. 122-77

Date: December 30, 2012
The Halifax Rainmen did what you’re supposed to do to bad teams on Sunday. They squashed them like a bug. The Rainmen added to a season of sorrows for the first-year Montreal Jazz, sending their overmatched and outgunned guests to a 122-77 NBL defeat at the Halifax Metro Centre. Montreal scored off the opening tip, but that’s as good as it got on their way to 0-16. It was 32-14 for the Raimnen at the end of the first quarter, 58-28 at the half and 86-59 after three quarters. The Jazz were bad with the basketball, committing 18 turnovers in the first half and 31 for the game. They lacked much energy on defence either, allowing the Rainmen a boatload of uncontested mid-range and long shots. Quinnel Brown had 21 points and seven rebounds for the Rainmen, Joey Haywood and Tyrone Levett added 19 points each and Antoine Tisby 15 points and eight rebounds. Halifax is 9-10 in the tight Atlantic Division. The Rainmen knew that the Jazz are having their troubles and didn’t want to allow them any level of comfort. “We came out aggressive,” said Haywood. “No matter if a team is bad or good, you’ve got to come out aggressive. “They work hard and you’ve got to give them credit for that, but we came out strong.” It was a chance for Halifax to get everybody some minutes and spread the ball around. It also wiped away memories of Thursday’s road loss in Saint John, part of a stretch of five losses in six outings. “We’ve got to work on our weaknesses,” said Haywood. “We’ve got to continue to move the ball and play as a team to win the championship.” It had a blowout feel early when Melvin Goins hit a three for an 11-4 lead. Quincy Okolie’s dunk off a feed from Tyler Richards and a trey from Hillary Haley had the hosts up 30-12 in the last seconds of the opening quarter. Levett and Brown made treys a minute apart late in the second quarter for a 50-26 lead and Brown jammed one home at the buzzer for a 30-point lead at the half. Haywood’s three in the third quarter had the Rainmen up 82-44, but the Jazz turned in some decent minutes, closing the period on a 15-4 burst. The good times didn’t last with Richards making back-to-back triples and Haywood adding another three, his team’s 10th, for a 116-77 spread in the final minutes. “We’re finally starting to click as a team,” said Okolie. “Coach (Rob Spon) talked a lot in practice this week about running our plays right and rebounding and everybody playing their role. We’ve got a lot of vets now ... and everything is starting to come together now.” Former Rainmen point guard Chris Hagan, part of last year’s team that went to the final, made his return to Metro Centre with the lowly Jazz. “It wasn’t much fun, man,” said Hagan. “We’ve just got to try to bounce back and play better next game, but it’s tough for us right now. We’re always going to play hard, but we’re just trying to get it together. “It was good to see my people in Halifax,” he added. “I miss this place.” J.R. Harrison had 20, Louis-Patrick Levros 12 and Terance Licorish 11 for Montreal, who were coached by assistant Pascal Jobin. Head coach Alejandro Hasbani had another commitment.
