Regular Season Round 17: Halifax R. - St.John M.R. 97-70

The Halifax Rainmen started 2013 off on the right foot, as they were able to defeat the Mill rats 97-70 before a Metro Centre crowd of 1810. The Rainmen raced off to a 10-4, led by Quinnel Brown's 8 points in the first 4 minutes. After the first quarter, the Rainmen led 23-16, powered by Brown with 12, and Hillary Haley with 4 off the bench. Sheray Thomas led the Mill Rats with 6. The Mill Rats won the second quarter 24-19, but still trailed the Rainmen 42-40 heading into half-time. The Rainmen were led by Brown with 14 and Brant Bailey with 8 in the first half, while Canadian Sheray Thomas led the Mill Rats with 13 & 7 rebounds. The Rainmen took control of the game early in the second half, as they started the third quarter on a 19-8 run, and went on to outscore the Mill Rats 55-30 in the Second Half. The final score was 97-70, as the Rainmen improved to 10-10 on the season and are now 3-1 in their last four games. The Rainmen were once again paced by a balanced effort, as they ha 6 players score in double figures- Antoine Tisby scored 12 of his game high 18 points in the second half and added 8 rebounds and 4 blocks, Joey Haywood had 16 points and 5 assists, Tyrone Levett had 15 and 8 rebounds, Quinnel Brown had 14 points and 8 rebounds, and Hillary Haley and Brant Bailey chipped in off the bench with 12 and 11 points respectively. Point guard Melvin Goins had a season high 9 assists and scored all 7 of his points in the second half. The Mill Rats were led by Canadian forward Sheray Thomas who had a double-double with 21 points and 10 rebounds. Anthony Anderson had 12 points, 9 rebounds and 6 assists but was held to 2-14 shooting from the field. The Rainmen played excellent defence on the Mill Rats, as Saint John shot only 26% from the field and 23% from 3 in the game, while the Rainmen shot 45% from the field and an impressive 26-28 (93%) from the free-throw line. The Rainmen also had a season high 10 blocks, with Tisby and Okolie combining for 7. The Rainmen travel to Moncton to take on the 10-11 Moncton Miracles this Friday, before returning to Halifax to host the 16-2 London Lightning in a rematch of last seasons NBL Canada Finals.
