Regular Season Round 66: Brooklyn N. - Sacramento K. 113-93

Date: January 5, 2013
P.J. Carlesimo couldn’t tolerate a tired effort from his Brooklyn Nets – though he wouldn’t have blamed them if they had dragged through the Barclays Center on Saturday night. Weary from Friday’s double-overtime win at Washington and worn by a recent grueling schedule, the Nets’ starters set a fast pace and their reserves completed the challenge against the Sacramento Kings. “I have to admit, I did not expect that,” Carlesimo said after receiving 50 points from his bench players as the Nets coasted to a 113-93 victory. MarShon Brooks and Mirza Teletovic helped spark Brooklyn to a third straight win, ending a period in which the Nets (19-15) played six games in nine days and nine games in 14 days. “They stepped up … it was great for us,” Deron Williams said of the reserves’ efforts. The Nets are 5-1 since Carlesimo took over as interim coach. “I think we woke up. That was an eye-opener,” Williams said of the firing of coach Avery Johnson. Lately, “I think guys are definitely getting their confidence back, and we’re getting our confidence back as a team.” Following Saturday night’s unanticipated energy surge, Carlesimo said he felt as good about beating the Kings (13-21) as he did after last week’s improbable win at Oklahoma City. “The bench did exactly what we needed them to do,” Carlesimo said. “They’re the ones that broke the game open.” Over a charmed second-quarter span, the Nets hit three straight jumpers just before the shot clock expired – two by Brooks and a three-pointer by Teletovic – to open a 15-point lead. The 6-foot-9 Teletovic also thrilled the sellout crowd with a blocked shot on DeMarcus Cousins that especially delighted Reggie Evans. “You know how difficult it is to replace Reggie? It’s impossible,” said Teletovic, who had 14 points and five offensive rebounds. “I’m just trying to do my best when I can.” Brook Lopez led the Nets with 18 points while Williams and Joe Johnson each scored 15. Brooks and Anday Blatche (11 rebounds) each scored 15 off the bench – allowing Williams and the rest of the Nets’ weary starters to relax by late in the fourth quarter. “We are a deeper team when guys like myself and Mirza play more minutes. It makes us more of a complete team,” said Brooks, who admitted his confidence is coming back after taking “a bit of a hit” before Carlesimo took over. “I look forward to more games like this.” It helped that the Kings were also coming off a Friday night game, which they won at Toronto. The Nets ran to a 65-47 halftime lead while shooting 67.5 percent; they shot 51.8 percent for the game. Cousins led the Kings with 28 points and 11 rebounds, though he was generally held in check coming off a 31-point, 20-rebound night at Toronto. “He’s got to always be your No. 1 concern when you play Sacramento,” Carlesimo had said before the game. “I just feel the energy wasn’t there from the beginning,” Cousins said. “I can say for myself, I started off sluggish. When we start off games like that, especially against good teams, we’re going to have a hard time.” Courtesy of: northjersey.com
