Regular Season Round 68: N.Orleans H. - San Antonio S. 95-88
Date: January 7, 2013
The return of Eric Gordon to the Hornets starting lineup has New Orleans playing a different style of basketball. That much was evident during the Hornets 95-88 victory over the Southwest Division leading San Antonio Spurs on Monday night at New Orleans Arena. In his first home start of the season, Gordon dazzled the crowd of 11,599 with an array of shots, scoring a game-high 24 points. Gordon's 24 points also matched a season high, which he scored in his first game of the season, a 98-95 win vs Charlotte on December 29. Gordon came up big when his team needed him the most. With 7:13 to play in the fourth quarter and the Spurs having pulled within three points at 75-78, Gordon made three consecutive jumpers to keep New Orleans comfortably in the lead. Anthony Davis followed with an alley-oop dunk assisted by Greivis Vasquez to give the Hornets an 86-77 lead. "(New Orleans) has a closer now," Spurs forward Stephen Jackson said. "Gordon took the game over and was going to work at the end of the game, doing what he wanted. He closed the game for them, and that's what they were missing, a closer." Gordon got plenty help from his teammates in what was one of the Hornets best efforts of the season. Davis scored 17 points to go with nine rebounds and three steals. Vasquez recorded a double-double with 14 points and 11 assists. "This is definitely our best effort as a whole team," Davis said. "We competed for the whole forty-eight minutes. We came out with a defensive mindset from the jump." Ryan Anderson came off the bench to score 13 points, going 3-of-6 from three-point range. Jason Smith went 4-of-4 from the floor, finishing with eight points. Robin Lopez added eight points and six rebounds. New Orleans shot 48 percent from the field for the game and held a 42-32 rebounding advantage over San Antonio. Manu Ginobili scored 21 off the bench to lead San Antonio (27-10). Tony Parker had 16 points. Tim Duncan struggled from the field, going 5-of-14, finishing with 13 points, eight rebounds and five turnovers. Kawhi Leonard added 10 points. New Orleans (9-25) controlled the game from the onset, and didn't trail after the 6:50 mark in the first quarter. The Hornets harassed the Spurs into 11 first-half turnovers (19 for the game), which resulted in a 49-41 halftime lead. New Orleans continued their onslaught in the second half, building their lead to 14 points late in the third quarter The Spurs were able to cut their deficit to five points heading into the fourth quarter due in part to a seven-point flurry by Ginobili. However, New Orleans responded with back-to-back threes by Brian Roberts and Anderson. Roberts finished with five points and two assists. The Spurs remained within reach of New Orleans throughout the final quarter before Gordon closed the door on San Antonio. "Tonight we collectively played hard for 48 minutes," Hornets coach Monty Williams said. "Even when San Antonio made a run, it was one of those runs that scared you a bit, but you knew Eric and Greivis playing that way, you had a chance to pull out of it." The win ended the Hornets six game losing streak to San Antonio, and also gave New Orleans back-to-back wins for only the second time this season. "It's so much fun when you win, " Vasquez said. "We need to keep it going, keep winning, and keep working. I think the best is yet to come. We just have to keep being humble and keep working hard." New Orleans will try to win their third straight game when they host the Houston Rockets on Wednesday night. Courtesy of: sportsnola.com
