Regular Season Round 12: Hapoel Holon - Maccabi Haifa 89-84

The most important game in the last round took place in Holon between second ranked Maccabi Haifa (8-4) and tenth ranked Hapoel Holon (4-8) on Monday night. Maccabi Haifa was defeated by Hapoel Holon in a tough game on the road 84-89. It ended at the same time the two-game winning streak of Maccabi Haifa. Maccabi Haifa trailed by 16 points after 3 quarters before a 31-20 run in the last quarter cut the deficit to 84-89 at the end of the game. Hapoel Holon made 17-of-22 free shots (77.3 percent) during the game. Strangely Maccabi Haifa outrebounded Hapoel Holon 40-26 including a 21-6 advantage in offensive rebounds. The best player for the winners was American forward Frank Hassell (203-88, college: ODU) who had a double-double by scoring 24 points and 11 rebounds. The other American import forward Tyler Smith (201-86, college: Tennessee) chipped in 8 points and 13 assists. At the other side the best for losing team was American-Greek swingman Pat Calathes (208-85, college: St.Joseph's) who recorded a double-double by scoring 21 points and 13 rebounds and international point guard Gal Mekel (190-88, college: Wichita St.) added 14 points, 5 rebounds and 7 assists respectively. Five Maccabi Haifa players scored in double figures. Hapoel Holon maintains tenth position with 4-8 record, which they share with Maccabi Ashdod. Maccabi Haifa at the other side keeps the second place with four games lost. They share the position with Hapoel Eilat. Hapoel Holon is looking forward to face Maccabi Ashdod (#11) on the road in the next round. Maccabi Haifa will play against Galil Gilboa (#12) in Rosh Pina and is hoping to win this game.
