Regular Season Round 69: Philadelph.76 - Brooklyn N. 89-109

Date: January 8, 2013
PHILADELPHIA – The Nets spent Tuesday morning answering questions about a sexual assault. Hours later, they stepped on the court and took care of the 76ers, 109-89, behind a rejuvenated Deron Williams. The Nets (19-15), winners of four straight, keep rolling under interim coach PJ Carlesimo, who improved to 6-1 since taking over for Avery Johnson. Brooklyn went on an 18-2 run to start the first half and never looked back, as the struggling 76ers (15-21) lost their fourth straight game in front of a deflated crowd of 16,167 at the Wells Fargo Center. It was a breeze in Philadelphia. Williams, exhibiting a renewed bounce in his step over the last week, finished with 22 points and five assists in 29 minutes. Reggie Evans was relentless on the glass, hauling in a career-high 23 rebounds. Joe Johnson had 15 points, four rebounds and five assists. Even Andray Blatche was productive with 20 points, shooting 8-for-15 with seven rebounds on the same day he was questioned by police for his connection in an alleged rape case. Blatche, who was released by police without being charged, entered the game early in the first quarter and played his usual rotational minutes. He bricked his first jumper, and then hit his next three shots – finishing the first half with 10 points. He logged 22 minutes, backing up Brook Lopez, who finished with 13 points while taking just 10 shots. Carlesimo said GM Billy King made the decision to play Blatche, even though he was interviewed by police early Tuesday morning and had a long night that included an alleged rape of a 21-year-old woman by another man in Blatche’s hotel room. “Andray is gonna play,” Carlesimo said. “He’s been playing well. And I expect him to play well (Tuesday).” The Nets, who next host the Suns on Friday, took the lead for good on Keith Bogans’ 3-pointer with 4:19 remaining in the second quarter. It was a cakewalk from that point, as the Nets outscored Philly, 35-14, in the third quarter. In the morning shootaround, players were asked about the sexual assault investigation that was just being reported. The storyline carried the day, but the Nets and Williams carried the game. “We’re just going to play basketball. That’s all we can do. That’s all we’re here to do.” Williams said. Evans had 16 rebounds in the first half, tying a franchise record set by Jayson Williams. Fans chanted his name as he left the court following another Brooklyn victory.
