Regular Season Round 74: New York K. - N.Orleans H. 100-87

Date: January 13, 2013
They called it a must-win game, a first for them this season. They vowed to be the more aggressive, more physical team on their home court. And they said they were going to use this game, a Sunday matinee against the New Orleans Hornets, as a way to start a new winning streak after their first three-game skid. The Knicks (24-13) accomplished most of their goals in a 100-87 victory at Madison Square Garden. They were first able to find some rhythm on defense, which pleased their coach, Mike Woodson, and the Garden crowd. The Knicks did a solid job of defending the paint, even though the Hornets featured a starting lineup that included the 7-foot center Robin Lopez and the 6-foot-10 Anthony Davis, last year’s No. 1 overall draft pick. Despite another lackluster first quarter, the Knicks rotated well and pressured the ball to hold the Hornets to only 12 points in the second quarter to take a lead they would never relinquish. Carmelo Anthony came alive in the second quarter as well. He made 7 of the 9 shots in the quarter on his way to a game-high 27 points. Eric Gordon led the Hornets, who entered the game on a four-game winning streak, with 22 points. The Knicks received some much-needed help from the schedule-makers after a difficult week. The Knicks fell to the Boston Celtics, the Indiana Pacers and the Chicago Bulls, all conference opponents, before hosting the Hornets (11-26), the worst team in the Western Conference. After the Knicks’ disappointing loss to the Bulls on Friday, Anthony said of Sunday’s game: “That’s a game that we have to go get. It’s a must win.” Tyson Chandler voiced a similar message Friday. “We have to win our next couple of games and start a nice winning streak,” Chandler said. “Things are never as bad as they seem, and things are never as good as they seem. We have to figure out a way to turn the tide.” The Knicks played inspired basketball in the second half. Woodson went back to the type of rotations that led to the Knicks starting the season 18-5. Woodson put Anthony back at the power forward position, and the strategy gave the Hornets problems on defense. Anthony was also paired with two point guards in Jason Kidd (8 assists) and Pablo Prigioni (5). Since Raymond Felton sustained a broken right pinkie finger three weeks ago, Woodson has been reluctant to put Kidd, 39, and Prigioni, 35, on the floor together. The ball movement, with passes going from one side of the court to the other, returned for the Knicks, and the result was plenty of open jumpers on the perimeter. Woodson also inserted Chris Copeland into the starting lineup to spread the floor. That gave the Knicks more shooters to discourage the Hornets from double-teaming Anthony near the paint. Copeland, along with a couple of 3-pointer from Steve Novak, put the game out of reach early in the fourth quarter. Copeland, a 28-year-old rookie, had his best sidekick performance alongside Anthony this season with 22 points and 4 rebounds in 30 minutes. He also made 4 3-pointers, a career high. REBOUNDS J. R. Smith made a big defensive mistake when he fouled the Hornets’ Brian Roberts with less than a second remaining on the clock. Roberts threw his arms up and was awarded a three-shot foul. Roberts made all three free throws. ...The Knicks trailed, 29-22, at the end of the first quarter. It was the fourth consecutive time the Knicks trailed after the first quarter. ... The Knicks’ medical staff increased Amar’e Stoudemire minutes limit from 20 minutes to 30 before Sunday’s game. Mike Woodson said he wanted to give Stoudemire more minutes, especially in the second half. Stoudemire finished with 12 points and 3 rebounds in 23 minutes. ...Before the game, Woodson said he expected Iman Shumpert, the youngest player on the team, to make his season debut in the Knicks’ next game, Thursday against the Detroit Pistons in London. Shumpert has spent the past seven months rehabilitating his left knee surgery. ... Tyson Chandler received a technical foul at the end of the second half for swinging his elbow at the Hornets players while going for an offensive rebound. The Hornets made the foul shot to begin the third quarter. Smith also received a technical in the third quarter. Courtesy of: https://www.nytimes.com
