Regular Season Round 75: Phoenix Suns - Oklah.City T. 90-102
Date: January 14, 2013
Eight role players are not greater than two superstars. The Suns’ hopes of starting their first win streak since mid-December were probably derailed as soon as Oklahoma City showed up, but the Thunder’s All-Star duo of Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook was the express delivering the damage. Durant’s 41 points and Westbrook’s 36 points overwhelmed the Suns for a 102-90 victory at US Airways Center. The West-leading Thunder (30-8) were missing starter Serge Ibaka for a second consecutive game due to a chest bruise and traveled from Portland after a narrow Sunday night win. In a cold arena, Westbrook caught fire over the first two and a half quarters and passed the hot hand on to Durant, whose 19 fourth-quarter points made for his fourth 40-point game in the past 14 games. “What can we do?” Suns center Marcin Gortat, who had 19 points and 15 rebounds, said of Durant. “I’m going to be silly right now, but maybe break his arm, break his leg? You can’t do anything. You can triple-team. He is still going to score.” The Suns (13-27) led after the first quarter for the sixth time in the past eight games and gamely stayed close until the fourth quarter. Once again, offensive outages undid the Suns, starting with losing the lead for good in the second quarter by going scoreless for 4:18. When the Suns had their last chance trailing 79-74 in the fourth quarter, they missed seven of eight shots while Durant was taking it to Michael Beasley, including a stutter-step blow-by for an and-one dunk on Gortat. P.J. Tucker started on Durant, but Beasley got the assignment down the stretch after closing the third quarter with a follow and a 3-pointer. Beasley finished with 14 points and 11 rebounds but also was five of 14 from the field with four turnovers in 26 minutes. “They executed to perfection down the stretch,” said Suns guard Shannon Brown, who had a team-high 21 points. “We’ve got to kind of learn from that.” Phoenix shot 41.7 percent, but Oklahoma City’s supporting cast only made 11 of 30 shots outside of Durant and Westbrook, who scored all but four of the Thunder’s second-half points. Suns swingman Jared Dudley missed his second consecutive game due to a right-wrist strain he suffered in Friday night’s fourth quarter at Brooklyn. Dudley said he expects to play Thursday night at Milwaukee. Suns center Jermaine O’Neal did not join the bench Monday night due to back spasms. Oklahoma City’s Kevin Durant had a 27-point second half to finish with 41 points after games of 42 and 33 points. The Suns were within four with 10:05 to go but made just one shot over the next 5:38. Number of points by which the entire Suns team outscored the Thunder trio of Durant, Russell Westbrook and Kevin Martin. Oklahoma City has the stars to carry them through nights when the team is tired from a back-to-back and down a man due to injury. Westbrook is normally a 41 percent shooter, but he hit 12 of his first 18 shots on Monday night. Right about when he cooled off, Durant picked up the slack and scored 23 of the Thunder’s next 29 points. Courtesy of: azcentral.com
