Regular Season Round 22: Oshawa P. - Halifax R. 127-124 OT

Date: January 16, 2013
Barnburners are becoming the norm when the Halifax Rainmen and Oshawa Power hook up on a basketball court. Rallying repeatedly, the resilient Power outlasted the Rainmen 127-124 in overtime on Wednesday night at General Motors Centre after their guests held double-digit leads in each quarter. Guard Nick Okorie, a training camp cut of the Rainmen, topped the Power with 37 points, including 12 in the fourth quarter and another eight in the extra period. Forward Jushay Rockett wasn’t far behind, netting 35 for the National Basketball League of Canada’s No. 2 offence. Joey Haywood tied a Rainmen season high with 27 points and continued his red-hot shooting from long range by hitting five triples, the most this year by a Halifax player. Trayvon Lathan added 20 for the visitors, who had seven players in double figures. Cedric Moodie scored 19, Quinnel Brown 14, Malcolm White 13, Antoine Tisby 12 and Hillary Haley 10. Halifax led by as many as 16 in the second quarter and held a 13-point cushion (99-86) with 71/2 minutes to go in the game. But the Power didn’t wilt in the dying seconds of regulation time, forcing overtime on Okorie’s three-point play with 13 seconds left after Moodie missed a free throw that would have given Halifax a four-point bulge. “We have to pull out games like that,” said Lathan, who fouled out after giving the Rainmen their last lead, 121-119 with two minutes to go in overtime. “They’re a young team and there’s no quit in them and we knew that coming into this game. We just let one get away.” The meeting was the third of the season between the two clubs, and it produced the third straight thrilling finish. Halifax won the opener of the series, a 105-104 nail-biter on Dec. 1 in Oshawa, then escaped with a 90-87 victory six days later at the Metro Centre on Brown’s miracle toss from the Power free-throw line at the buzzer. The Rainmen used a 13-0 run to lead 32-21 after the first quarter. But Oshawa buried six treys in the second and had a 21-6 spurt of their own to go into the locker-room at halftime down just 63-59. Haywood’s three-pointer and seven straight points by White helped Halifax finish the third on a 10-0 run to go ahead 90-80 before the Power came back yet again. “We have to close out, finish the deal,” Lathan lamented. “If we want to win a championship, we can’t allow that to happen.” Oshawa improved to 13-10, second in the Central Division, while the Rainmen slipped back into a second-place tie in the Atlantic Division with the Saint John Mill Rats at 11-13. Halifax topped its previous season high for points scored but also surrendered a season high. The team wraps up a three-game road swing Friday night in Windsor against the Express (10-13), then returns home Sunday afternoon to entertain the Moncton Miracles (12-15).
