Regular Season Round 79: Dallas M. - Oklah.City T. 114-117 OT

Date: January 18, 2013
They had hoped to close out the first half of the season with a bang. Unfortunately for the Dallas Mavericks, it was the Oklahoma City Thunder who supplied most of Friday's fireworks at American Airlines Center. Kevin Durant scored 52 points and the Thunder won their sixth straight game, 117-114 over the Mavs in overtime. The loss snapped the Mavs' four-game winning streak as they reached the midway point of the season with a 17-24 record. All appeared lost for the Mavs in regulation play until O.J. Mayo fired in a 3-pointer with 2.3 seconds left to tie the game at 105-105 and send it into overtime. OKC came to town armed with the NBA's best record and ready to show why it is favored to represent the Western Conference in the NBA Finals for the second year in a row. The Mavs, meanwhile, were trying to take another baby step toward respectability. "We've got a long ways to go, but we're going in the right direction," owner Mark Cuban said. "It's been better the last few games. We were able to close out some games and do some things right." Against the Thunder, however, the Mavs didn't do enough of the right things when it mattered most. Oklahoma City led by as much as 72-58 with 5:41 left in the third quarter following back-to-back baskets by Russell Westbrook. But the Mavs got within 89-88 with 8:25 left on a pair of free throws by Dirk Nowitzki. The Mavs then took a 90-89 lead on a pair of free throws by Nowitzki with 6:41 remaining. A jumper by Nowitzki got the lead to 92-89, and another jumper by Elton Brand kept the Mavs' lead at three (94-91). Six consecutive free throws by Durant gave the Thunder a 101-98 lead with 1:16 to go. Nowitkzi then missed a wide-open 3-pointer, but hit a pair of free throws with 41 seconds left to get the Mavs within 101-100. But the Mavs' Achilles' Heel -- a lack of rebounding -- came back to bite them at the worst possible time. Durant missed a short jumper from the right side, only to see Serge Ibaka grab the offensive rebound with 18 seconds left. Vince Carter led the Mavs with 29 points, Mayo and Nowitzki each had 18 apiece and Darren Collison popped in 15 apiece, and Brand scored all 10 of his points in the final quarter. With the second half of the season for the Mavs set to start at 5 p.m. Sunday in Orlando, Dallas knows there's a long way before anyone can determine whether or not they'll be able to extend their playoff streak to 13 years in a row. "We've got 41 games left, so we know how good we can be," Brand said. "We want to get to that level." And that next level is hanging on and digging deep to beat teams of the Thunder's caliber. "You've got to stay optimistic, stay positive and keep getting better and look at the bright side of what you can do out there and how you can close it out," forward Shawn Marion said. "It ain't over till the fat lady sings. "And it's a lot of basketball left to be played and a lot of teams are going to be up and down just like we were. If we can just gain ground and get a little bit momentum, we'll be alright." Now the Mavs will only play one game -- Sunday in Orlando -- over the next six days. That's a quirk in the schedule they hope to take advantage of. "The guys will love it, that's for sure," Cuban said. "It gives us a chance to get rested and hopefully get a bunch of good practices in." Courtesy of: star-telegram.com
