Regular Season Round 79: Boston C. - Chicago B. 99-100 OT
Date: January 18, 2013
Defensively, the Celtics did everything they could. They bottled up every Chicago weapon, forcing the Bulls into scramble mode as the clock melted to under five seconds. Marco Belinelli, whose previous shot hit the top of the backboard, had no choice but to force another. His fadeaway 14-footer nearly falling down rattled through with 3.1 seconds left, and the Celtics, with no timeouts left, were relegated to a Courtney Lee 25-footer that clanged off the backboard, resulting in an excruciating 100-99 overtime loss Friday at TD Garden. The Celtics were close to sealing this one in regulation, but allowed the Bulls to force a jump ball with 9.4 seconds left and Kirk Hinrich sent the game into overtime with a jumper after Bellinelli fumbled the ball on a drive. In overtime, the Celtics rallied from a 98-95 deficit behind two free throws from Paul Pierce, the Belinelli shot that hit the top of the backboard, and a 15-footer from Jason Terry with 12.5 left. Joakim Noah, pressured as time was winding down, flipped the ball to Carlos Boozer, who then found Belinelli, who shot the ball over Terry for the winner. Rajon Rondo led the Celtics with 30 points but he fouled out in overtime. Pierce and Garnett combined for 10-for-33 shooting and 29 points as the Celtics struggled to score most of the night. The Celtics owned a 2-point lead with 12.1 seconds left but managed to blow the lead in stunning fashion. Rondo inbounded the ball to Pierce in the corner, but he was tied up by Noah moments before Rondo called timeout. Noah won the jump ball and Belinelli headed down the court in full steam, losing the ball as he entered the key. Kirk Hinrich scooped up fumbled ball and canned a 15-footer from the elbow with two seconds left for the tie. Rondo fired an inbounds pass to Garnett, but his leaning 22-footer at the buzzer wasn’t close. A 6-0 run midway through the fourth quarter gave the Celtics their first lead with 4:37 left in regulation as Rondo hit one of two free throws. The Celtics missed four free throws in the final period, and that was critical. Garnett missed one that could have given the Celtics a 1-point lead with 3:29 left. After a Pierce layup tied the game at 83, Noah and Garnett each missed one of two free throws. Rondo gave the Celtics an 86-84 lead with 36.8 left. Carlos Boozer was fouled with 22.5 left but he missed the first free throw, and the Celtics retained a 1-point lead. Garnett apparently sealed the game with two free throws with 20.1 seconds left. Hinrich was fouled with 12.1 and made just one free throw, giving the Celtics the ball back with a 88-86 lead, but Pierce was tied up by Noah, leading to Chicago’s comeback. Courtesy of: boston.com
