Regular Season Round 82: New York K. - Brooklyn N. 85-88
Date: January 21, 2013
The town, at least for now, belongs to both teams. The Knicks’ bid to claim the metropolis as their own fell as short as Carmelo Anthony’s potential go-ahead jumper against the Nets in the final seconds on Monday. Instead, the race for the Atlantic Division title is very much wide open for the two local teams who won’t meet again unless they see each other in the playoffs. And wouldn’t that be fun. “It’s over,” Anthony said after Brooklyn rallied for an 88-85 win at the Garden on Martin Luther King Day. “We don’t see them anymore. It is the beginning of something that is going to be there for a long, long time. These games that we play against Brooklyn definitely are going to be tough hard battles.” The Nets evened the season series at 2-2 when Joe Johnson hit the go-ahead jumper with 22.3 seconds left and when Anthony failed to strike iron from close range with Gerald Wallace’s hand in his face. Brooklyn’s first win at MSG improved the Nets’ record to 25-16 and moved them to within one game of the first-place Knicks (25-14) in the Atlantic. “Two and two against them stinks,” J.R. Smith said. “It’s like kissing your sister.” Smith had a chance to tie the game at the buzzer but his contested 3-pointer caromed off the backboard, hit the front of the rim and fell out. The Knicks went into a funk in the fourth quarter as they shot 6-for-19 and produced just one field goal in the last 5:18. Anthony scored 29 points but took 29 shots and Smith scored 16 points on 19 shots. Both Anthony and Amar’e Stoudemire had potential game-tying layups rejected by Brook Lopez in the final four minutes as Anthony missed all four shots he attempted in the fourth quarter. “I didn’t execute,” said Anthony, who didn’t rule out being fatigued from the Knicks’ trip to London last week. “I didn’t make shots down the stretch. Shots I know I can make, I normally make, I’ve been making down the stretch. It is what it is about that. On to the next game.” Smith refused to use the travel abroad as an excuse, saying that the Knicks had an off day on Saturday and had a training session on Sunday. He was more upset over a recurring theme: the Knicks’ inability to get off to a good start, especially at home. “We have a great crowd, great fans and for us to come out there and not play the way we’re capable of to start the game off and always have to fight back is unacceptable,” he said. “It’s disrespectful to them more than anything, and for us we should be embarrassed by it.” Smith was also brutally honest about his defense on Johnson’s go-ahead jumper. He got caught in a switch and when Johnson drove left, Smith failed to make it tough for the Nets’ shooting guard, saying, “I didn’t have a hand up and if you don’t have a hand up against an All Star-caliber guy like Joe it’s kinda hand down, man down. It was good defense until the end.” Johnson led the Nets with 25 points, including 11 in the first quarter and 10 in the fourth. The Knicks had held Brooklyn scoreless for five minutes and 14 seconds before Johnson’s jumper over Smith made it 85-84. Lopez finished with 14 points, 11 rebounds and four blocks and had a better afternoon than Tyson Chandler in the battle of centers vying for their first-ever All Star berth. Kris Humprhies added 11 points and 13 rebounds and Deron Williams had 14 points and 12 assists but had his streak of 52 straight made free throws end, which gave the Knicks a chance to tie it with a three. Stoudemire scored 15 for the Knicks and was set up for two uncontested layups by Anthony, who was forced to run the offense for a few minutes after Pablo Prigioni injured his right big toe in the third quarter. Prigioni was unavailable in the fourth quarter and the Knicks went four minutes in the final period without a point guard until Jason Kidd returned. Kidd, though, missed a crucial free throw in the final seconds. Prigioni reported afterward that he hadn’t suffered a break and believes he will be available for Thursday’s game against the Celtics in Boston, the first meeting between the teams since Anthony was suspended for confronting Kevin Garnett after a Knick loss two weeks ago. “We just gotta figure out a way to win divisional games,” Smith said. “We have Boston coming up. We gotta get that win in Boston. We know it’s going to be a tough one. We have to find a way to grind it out.” Courtesy of: nydailynews.com
