Regular Season Round 88: Boston C. - Miami Heat 100-98

Date: January 27, 2013
Some came to jeer Ray Allen, some to cheer. They left exhausted, and with greater concerns. And it had nothing to do with Allen returning to TD Garden for the first time since leaving the Boston Celtics as a free agent in the offseason and putting together a breakout performance. It was nothing that could even be soothed by this exhilarating 100-98 double-overtime victory Sunday over the Miami Heat. Ultimately, to the locals, who both cheered and jeered Allen, and watched the shorthanded Celtics put together a gritty effort, this proved to be an afternoon to mourn a loss, and not of Allen, with it announced during the third quarter that All-Star point guard Rondo was lost for the season with a torn ACL in his right knee. The loss of Rondo means the teams likely will not meet in the playoffs for a fourth consecutive season, unless the Celtics can hold off the Philadelphia 76ers for the eighth and final playoff seed in the Eastern Conference. It also was yet another opportunity missed to make a road statement, momentum lost from recent road victories over the Golden State Warriors and Los Angeles Lakers. LeBron James led the Heat with 34 points and 16 rebounds, with Chris Bosh contributing 16 rebounds. As for Allen, the emotions of another tightly contested Heat-Celtics game left little room for nostalgia, save for a second-quarter video presentation that began with a few fans jeering Allen and ended with most in the crowd offering a standing ovation. Allen closed with 21 points on 7-of-17 shooting, in perhaps his best road effort of the season. He entered shooting .404 on the road this season, .538 at home. For the Celtics, Paul Pierce closed with a triple-double, with 17 points, 13 rebounds and 10 assists. Celtics guard Jason Terry opened the scoring in the second overtime with a pair of free throws, with Bosh following with a dunk to tie it 95-95. James then was off a post-up move, with Dwyane Wade called for his fifth foul on the Celtics' ensuing possession. After the non-shooting foul, Celtics forward Kevin Garnett was off with a jumper. Off an inbounds pass with 4.1 seconds on the shot clock, James scored on a layup, was fouled by Pierce and made the ensuing free throw for a 98-95 Heat lead. Terry came back with a layup with 54.9 seconds to play to draw Boston within 98-97. Wade then fell to 6 of 20 from the field, with Pierce coming around with a 22-foot jumper in transition for a 99-98 Boston lead with 30.4 seconds to play. James then set up a jumper that was off, with the Celtics controlling the rebound with 5.6 seconds to play. That sent Pierce to the line, where he made on the first of his two free throws for a 100-98 Boston lead. It ended on a missed Shane Battier 3-pointer Allen opened the scoring in the first overtime with a reverse layup, his shot matched by a layup by Garnett. James then rolled to a layup for a 91-89 lead, with another James layup staking the Heat to a 93-89 lead. Garnett responded with a pair of baskets of his own to tie it 93-93 with 1:14 to play in the first overtime. Allen then was called for a charge with 47.7 seconds left. Misses by Pierce, James and Wade followed as the first extra period came to a close. With James opening the third quarter with a pair of 3-pointers and closing it with consecutive baskets, the Heat took a 68-64 lead into the fourth quarter. The Celtics then pushed to into the lead, with the Heat requiring a pair of Allen 3-pointers and one with seven seconds left in regulation from James to force overtime. Boston moved to an 85-81 lead with 59.9 seconds to play in regulation on a Kevin Garnett jumper. James then missed a 3-pointer, but Allen came back with a 3-pointer that drew the Heat within 85-84 with 25.1 seconds to play in regulation. Forced to foul, the Heat sent Terry to the line with 21.2 seconds to play. A nemesis from the days of Heat-Mavericks, Terry drained both free throws for an 87-84 Celtics lead. Allen then was off with a pointer, but the Heat controlled the rebound, with James draining a 3-pointer with seven seconds to play in regulation to tie it 87-87, with the game going to overtime on a missed Terry jumper at the fourth-quarter buzzer. With Bosh making five of his first six shots, the Heat pushed to an eight-point lead in the second quarter, only to have Boston tie it 45-45 at the close of the first half. Even with Rondo out and the Celtics lacking a double-figure scorer over the first two periods, the Heat got little in support of Bosh, James and Wade, with James scoring 10 in the first half and Wade eight. Allen had his moments early for the Heat, with seven first-half points, but even with Rashard Lewis injected into the mix for nine second-quarter minutes, the Heat closed the first half without a successful 3-pointer. The Heat's first 3-pointer came on their first shot of the second half, from James, who also made one on the Heat's second shot of the third quarter. The Celtics forced the halftime tie despite Pierce opening 1 of 5. As has often been the case with Heat-Celtics, it got chippy, first in the second quarter with Lewis and Celtics forward Jared Sullinger sharing a double technical foul and then later, in the fourth, with Heat guard Norris Cole separated from Terry after a Terry foul. The Heat entered having lost nine consecutive regular-season games in Boston. Entering the afternoon, the Heat's previous regular-season win in Boston was April 6, 2007, when Shaquille O'Neal went for 22 points and 11 rebounds. The game completed the first half of the Heat's 82-game schedule. James entered averaging 30.2 points against Celtics over his career, averaging only more against the Utah Jazz among the league's 30 teams. Wade entered 21.5 points against the Celtics, his lowest average against an opponent. Courtesy of: https://www.sun-sentinel.com
