Regular Season Round 35: Austin T. - Rio Grande VV 106-91

Date: January 27, 2013
Behind Rick Jackson’s 21 points and 25 rebounds, the Austin Toros snapped Rio Grande Valley’s seven-game winning streak with a 106-91 victory Sunday at Cedar Park Center. The win moved the Toros to within one game of the Vipers for the NBA D-League Central Division lead. “I was feeling really good,” Jackson said. “I think the points came just from me being aggressive and going for rebounds. I think I got a lot of points off of putbacks and just hanging around the basket looking for rebounds.” The Toros, who led from start to finish, had six players in double figures. Jamarr Sanders finished with 24 points on 8 for 10 shooting. JaMychal Green, who replaced an injured Tyler Wilkerson in the starting lineup, had 15 points and 12 rebounds. Austin has won seven of its last eight contests, and coach Taylor Jenkins liked his team’s effort Sunday. “We’ve been introducing this concept of respecting the full 48 minutes,” Jenkins said. “You got your in-state rival coming in here, and for us to get better, it’s our guys coming in, whether they’re a starter or bench guy, and sustaining it for 48 minutes.” Jenkins, an assistant coach for four seasons with the Toros before this year, has seen only one comparable game to Jackson’s in terms of rebounds. “One Toro in the past, Dwayne Jones, had a 20-plus rebound game,” Jenkins said. “That’s been our message with Rick, and he’s been itching to get a 20-rebound game, so I’m really happy for him. I know scouts are going to be looking at that and following up on him, so that’s very rare in this league.” After jumping out to an 11-4 lead, Austin went up by as many as 25, and the Vipers could never get within striking distance. Rio Grande Valley shot just 36 percent from the field and 18 percent behind the 3-point line. “It starts out on defense,” Sanders said. “Everybody’s buying in … and we met our goal defensively, which led to easy buckets in transition. When you’re getting stops, the offense just flows a lot better, and it showed tonight.” Austin will hit the road for three games before returning Feb. 8 to face Canton. Courtesy of: statesman.com
