Regular Season Round 89: Philadelph.76 - Memphis G. 100-103
Date: January 28, 2013
Evan Turner contributed a season-high 27 points and seven assists, but the Sixers were held scoreless over the final three minutes of regulation in falling 103-100 to the Memphis Grizzlies tonight before a crowd of 15,448 at the Wells Fargo Center. With the loss, the Sixers (17-26) still haven’t won consecutive games since the end of November. Thad Young had 23 points and seven rebounds, and Jrue Holiday added 18 points and 10 assists for Philadelphia. Marc Gasol had 27 points, seven rebounds, seven assists and two blocks to lead the Grizzlies (29-15). Rudy Gay had 26 points and seven rebounds and Jerryd Bayless added 21 points and nine assists. The Sixers failed to score after a bucket by Holiday put Philadelphia up 100-97 with three minutes to play. They led 100-99 with less than a minute to go. Bayless missed a long shot, but Gay snagged the rebound and dropped in a lay-in for a 101-100 lead with 13.3 seconds remaining. Holiday zig-zagged down court and dished to Thad Young, who missed a short 2. The Grizzlies took over with 1.2 seconds to play and were fouled. Rudy Gay hit both of his free throws to set the final score. Gasol blocked a 3-point attempt by Nick Young as time expired. Sixers coach Doug Collins started Holiday, Turner, Thad Young, Nick Young and Spencer Hawes for the second game in a row after that combination sparked the Sixers to a rout of the Knicks on Saturday. The same group helped Philadelphia take a 33-20 advantage after one quarter against the Grizzlies. It was the Sixers’ highest-scoring first quarter of the season. But Memphis stormed back. The Grizzlies shot 14 for 18 from the field and scored 37 points in second quarter, turning a 17-point deficit into a 57-54 halftime lead. The Sixers made 11 of their first 15 shots and led 32-15 in the first quarter before being outscored 42-22 in the first half. The teams entered the fourth quarter tied at 79.
