Regular Season Round 91: New York K. - Orlando M. 113-97

Date: January 30, 2013
At some point, someone had to start playing defense. Or at least exert maximum effort on the defensive end. Neither the Knicks nor the Orlando Magic did so through the first 30 minutes of Wednesday’s game. Layups were easy to come by. Three-point shooters were wide open. And there were plenty of opportunities to score in transition. A frustrated Coach Mike Woodson stood near his bench with his arms folded and stared out at his players’ poor defensive effort. In those 30 minutes, Woodson was trying to find a lineup that would provide some resistance to the Magic. Woodson put Amar’e Stoudemire, never known for defense, into the game with 6 minutes 28 seconds left in the third quarter. What was most intriguing about the Knicks’ lineup Wednesday was that Woodson had Stoudemire on the floor with Carmelo Anthony and Tyson Chandler. When the three players — the highest-paid on the team — played together last season, they struggled on both ends of the floor. But for five minutes against the Magic, the trio, along with J. R. Smith and Raymond Felton, showed encouraging signs that they can coexist and thrive together. Their play was the turning point in the Knicks’ 113-97 victory at Madison Square Garden. Adding an exclamation point, Anthony scored 20 points to set a team record with his 30th straight 20-point game. When Stoudemire entered the game, the Knicks (28-15) led by 66-62. Stoudemire then helped create a Magic turnover, Chandler did a better job of defending the paint and Anthony challenged jump shooters instead of leaking out on transition. The three players also slowed the game, helping to quell the Magic’s quick-shooting offense. When Chandler went to the bench, the Knicks extended their lead to 77-70. The Magic were held to 8 points in that stretch. “When us three are out there on the court, we’re making a lot of things happen, offensive and defensively,” Anthony said. “We are key pieces to this team. We definitely are going to have to be on the basketball court when it counts.” Before the game, Woodson said he was planned to have Stoudemire play more with Anthony and Chandler. Stoudemire, who has accepted his role coming off the bench, entered the game with 15 points in each of his previous five games. “I’m willing to do whatever it takes to win,” Stoudemire said. “I’ve accomplished a lot in my career so far. The next thing to accomplish is to win a championship and whatever role I need to step into, I totally up for it as long as we win.” On offense, though, spacing was usually the biggest issue for the three players. Woodson said he expected it to be better this season now that Stoudemire, who used to be a perimeter scorer, is being asked to score in the post. “I thought they played great off of each other,” Woodson said. “Carmelo triggered a lot of that. Stoudemire has become a low-post threat. When he catches the ball down there he’s been able to produce. It’s going to be huge for us.” Stoudemire, Anthony and Chandler also performed well on offense. Chandler led the team with 21 points and 7 rebounds. Anthony had 7 rebounds. Stoudemire finished with 14 points (making all 7 of his shots) and 4 rebounds. Before the Knicks toughened on defense, the Magic (14-31) scored at will with a two-guard combination of Jameer Nelson and J. J. Redick. Nelson, a point guard, drove past any defender Woodson put on him — Raymond Felton, Iman Shumpert or Pablo Prigioni — to score his 21 points. Redick, a shooting guard, made four 3-pointers to score a team-high 29 points. Prigioni extended the Knicks’ lead in the fourth quarter once Anthony was on the bench. Prigioni started the quarter with a pick-and-roll play with Stoudemire that resulted in a one-handed dunk by Stoudemire. Prigioni, who is more focused on passing than shooting, even scored 11 points. He made a 3-pointer from the corner. Then, when he was wide open in the same spot, Prigioni used a pump-fake to get to the rim for a layup. When Prigioni was excelling, the Knicks had their first comfortable lead of the game at 88-78. From there, Anthony took over. He scored 5 points in the fourth and created scoring opportunities for Felton, Smith and Steve Novak, who scored all 8 of his points in the fourth. REBOUNDS Jason Kidd missed the game with back spasms. Mike Woodson is expecting Kidd to return to the court for Friday’s home game against the Milwaukee Bucks. Last season, while playing for the Dallas Mavericks, Kidd missed four games with back spasms. The same injury put him out for four games in November and December. ... Orlando’s Glen Davis sustained a left foot injury in the first quarter. He did not return. He finished with 2 points and 3 assists in four minutes. Courtesy of: https://www.nytimes.com
