Regular Season Round 93: Denver N. - N.Orleans H. 113-98

Date: February 1, 2013
Nuggets coach George Karl insists he doesn't pay attention to records more than quality of play. Therefore, his team's loss to Washington: Not as bad as it seemed. His team's game Friday night against New Orleans: Tougher than the Hornets' 15-31 record made it look. Karl was right. The Nuggets and Hornets slugged it out before the home team pulled out a 113-98 victory at the Pepsi Center. For how they operate this season, it was vintage Nuggets — which is to say the Hornets hung around until they were put away in the fourth quarter. As a result, just like that the Nuggets won their sixth consecutive game and their 13th in the last 16 games. It was said that being home would help after a road-heavy start to the season and, boy, has it. Buried at the bottom of the playoff race at the start of the new year, the Nuggets are now percentage points out of the fourth slot in the Western Conference. And there are still two home games remaining before a four-game road trip leading into the NBA all-star break. Friday's victory was powered by Denver's defense, though the numbers were a bit odd. New Orleans hit 52.8 percent of its shots, a disconcerting number for any team, except Friday the Nuggets had turnovers on their side. Denver forced 22 New Orleans miscues and cashed in on them all game long. When the dust settled, the Nuggets had scored a season-high 32 points off those turnovers and had 32 fast- break points to go with it, meaning those turnovers were being pushed up the court on a regular basis. Defensively, Ty Lawson took the challenge of guarding Hornets guard Greivis Vasquez — a player improving at such a rapid rate, the Nuggets made him priority No. 1 in their plan to slow New Orleans. "Coach wanted me to pick up Greivis early," Lawson said, "then everybody else came in and started picking up. Corey (Brewer) came in and got three steals or three deflections early and that led to our break. We started getting easy baskets and that fueled us to the win." Lawson and others hounded Vasquez all game long. Vasquez had a decent night — 13 points and nine assists — but defending him is only partly about limiting production. It's more about getting him and the New Orleans offense off schedule. For the most part, the Nuggets got it done. And while the Nuggets were causing all kinds of mistakes by the Hornets on the defensive end, Lawson continued his steady improvement in the second half of the season on offense. He poured in 21 points and also had 13 assists, his fifth double-double of the season. It also was his third 20-point, 10-assist game of the season. "I was just trying to be aggressive and take what they gave me," Lawson said. "If they gave me a shot, I was shooting it. If not, I was taking it to the basket and finding Gallo in the corner or a big (on the block). And when I did that, my teammates were knocking down big shots." Courtesy of: denverpost.com Andre Iguodala led the Nuggets with 24 points and Danilo Gallinari contributed 18. Brewer led all Denver scorers off the bench with 17 points. "The turnovers got us playing up and down the court a little bit," Karl said. "The points off of turnovers gave us the confidence to win the game."
