Regular Season Round 97: Houston R. - Golden St.W. 140-109
Date: February 5, 2013
HOUSTON -- Well, if the Warriors can take any consolation from the 140-109 thrashing they took Tuesday, it was that history was not made on their watch. The Warriors did everything they could, including intentionally fouling three times in the final minute of a blowout, to prevent the Rockets from setting an NBA record for most threes in a game. But the 23 Houston made, on 40 attempts, was damage enough. The Rockets tied the mark set by Orlando in January 2009. Golden State had its four-game win streak snapped in embarrassing fashion. The Warriors gave up the most points in a game since Denver dropped 140 on visiting Golden State on November 2006. The Rockets shot 50.5 percent and had eight players with at least 11 points. Bay Area native Jeremy Lin led the way with 28 points and nine assists. Houston didn't even need much from All-Star guard James Harden, who had 18 points on 11 shots. But Golden State's apparent eagerness to keep Lin and Harden from penetrating gave Houston a buffet of open looks. And the Rockets feasted. They hit 3s off the drive-and-dish. They hit 3s off quick ball reversals. They hit 3s in transition. Golden State, despite all its offensive weapons, simply couldn't keep up. Guard Jarrett Jack led the Warriors with 20 points off the bench. Forward David Lee had 18 points and seven rebounds in just 27 minutes. Golden State's backcourt duo of Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson combined for 13 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Advertisement -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- points on 6 of 17 shooting, including 1-for-6 from 3-point range. The Warriors were blown out to start a road trip for the second time in two weeks. Their last four-games-in-five-nights roadie began without a blowout loss at Chicago on Jan. 25. The Rockets put up 77 points in the first half, the most allowed by Golden State in any half this season, on 55.3 percent shooting. It was powered by a historic shooting performance from Houston. They made 14 of 18 from 3-point range in the first half, tying an NBA record for 3-pointers in a half. The Warriors actually had a great first half of offense. They shot 57.8 percent, had four players in double figures and turned the ball over just five times. After a driving layup by Lee and a pull-up by Jack, the Warriors trailed 52-49 and seemed to have weathered the 3-point storm. But it was just beginning. Curry sagged too far in the lane to be prepared to help on the drive. After one pass, Douglas took advantage by dropping in the 3. After a pair misses by Jack, Harden walked into a 3-pointer from the right wing in transition. Curry tried to answer with a 3-pointer but clanked. Seconds later, Houston -- with a cross-court pass -- had buried another 3-pointer. This time from Patterson in the left corner. Just like that, Golden State was down 61-49. The Rockets went on to make five of their next six from deep in mounting a 25-10 run that pushed their lead to 77-59. Curry banked in a buzzer-beater from just beyond half-court. But with the way Golden State got abused by the Rockets offense, it was merely a consolation prize. Curry hardly mustered a celebration. The Rockets finally began to cool down from 3 in the third quarter. But first, they turned it into a laugher. Lee opened the third quarter by posting up Patterson and banking in a turnaround hook. The Warriors trailed 77-64. But any hopes Golden State had of making it a tight game were vanquished by a 14-2 Houston run. Lin started it with a layup, then he and Parsons traded 3-pointers. Not even two minutes later, Parsons found himself wide open in the corner in front of the Warriors' bench. Of course he made it. Parsons let out a scream before running back on defense. Perhaps it was in response to Lee, who didn't get there in time to contest the shot so he screamed to try to distract Parsons. Or maybe Parsons screamed because he knew he'd knocked down a franchise-record 17th 3-pointer. Or maybe he knew what most everyone watching knew -- the game was over.
