Regular Season Round 102: New York K. - LA Clippers 88-102

Date: February 10, 2013
Through the first 34 minutes and 39 seconds of the game, 40-year-old Grant Hill watched from the bench as his athletic teammate, Blake Griffin, tried in vain to defend Carmelo Anthony. No matter how high Griffin can jump or how strong he is, there wasn’t a thing he could do to slow Anthony, who already had poured in 33 points — more than half the Knicks’ total to that point. Finally, Clippers coach Vinnie Del Negro nudged Hill from the bench and sent him cold into what is one of the toughest defensive assignments in the NBA. Hill never left the game — and the game turned around. Anthony scored five points in the those final minutes of the third quarter and then went silent in the fourth as the Knicks saw a brief lead disappear and the Clippers run away for a 102-88 win Sunday at Madison Square Garden. Hill may not have the athletic skills he did years ago, but he never left Anthony for a moment, trying desperately to keep the ball out of hands of the Knicks’ one-man show. “He’s a great player,” Hill said. “I have so much respect for him and I enjoy playing against him. But he’s a challenge, man, especially when you’re sitting for three quarters. You try to make him work. He’s been playing out of his mind this year. I think he’s gotten better. “You’ve got to pick him up on the opposite end. As soon as we change ends it’s like, ‘Where’s ’Melo? Let’s find him.’ He’s done a great job of hitting those transition, trailing three’s. That’s one thing he wasn’t doing last year. But he’s doing it this year.” Anthony sat out the first two minutes of the fourth quarter and then didn’t get a shot attempt off, a wayward three-point try, until 5:25 remained and the Knicks were behind by double-digits. Anthony hit just one field goal attempt in the fourth — and attempted two. He finished with 42 points, but just four in that fourth quarter. “He denied,” Anthony said of Hill. “I heard their coaches yelling, ‘Don’t let him catch it, make it tough.’ They were sending two guys at me in the pick-and-roll, trapping pick-and-rolls. They made an adjustment, especially late in the fourth quarter. “They started doubling more in the pick-and-roll, started getting the ball out of my hands, started fronting the post. They just made some adjustments, just getting the ball out of my hands, making somebody else make plays and try to win the game.” It was hardly Anthony’s fault since he almost singlehandedly kept the Knicks in the game to that point. When the Clippers finally got the ball out of his hands there was no help anywhere. The Knicks got 20 points from Raymond Felton, but little else. The bench was outscored, 48-15, by the Clippers bench as Jamal Crawford delivered a team-high 27. J.R. Smith was 1-for-9 for six points while Amar’e Stoudemire had nine points on 4-of-9 shooting. The Knicks had no answers for the Clippers’ bench, not to mention Chris Paul, who in his second game back from a bruised kneecap had 25 points and seven assists. “There’s four other guys out there on the basketball court,” Anthony said. “We’ve just got to make plays. We’ve been doing that all season long. Today we didn’t make plays in the fourth quarter and we didn’t win the game. So it’s go on to the next game.” “I sat ’Melo to start the fourth to kind of give him a blow,” Woodson said. “In hindsight, maybe I should have let him keep going. Other guys on this team have got to step up and play. That two-minute stretch, we dug a hole right out of the chute to start the fourth quarter. I didn’t give him enough time to get back in it and I went back to our starters. By that time, ’Melo cooled off a little bit and we had no offensive flow.” Courtesy of: northjersey.com
