Regular Season Round 44: Sioux Falls S. - Iowa E. 117-112
Date: February 19, 2013
With temperatures freezing on the outside, the Sioux Falls Skyforce looked to extend their current hot streak and did in impressive fashion with a virtuoso performance from forward Demetris Nichols on Tuesday night. Nichols scored a game-high 42 points and added eight assists and seven rebounds, propelling the Skyforce (20-12) to their third straight win and seventh in a row at home in defeating Iowa 117-112 before 2,087 fans. Nichols, who represented the team at the D-League All-Star Game last weekend, became the first Sioux Falls player to score 40 points in a game since Kirk Penney tallied 40 against Bakersfield on April 2, 2011. Nichols deferred his individual performance and expressed his gratitude to teammates. “My teammates did a great job finding me,” he said. “Even though I scored 42, I wouldn’t be able to do that without my teammates. I just wanted to come out there and be ready to play.” Nichols was one of five Skyforce players in double figures as Mychel Thompson scored 17 points while Mark Tyndale tallied 15 and Mike Davis and Damian Saunders each scored 10. Every Sioux Falls player that played in the game scored at least four points. Skyforce coach Joel Abelson said the win was a total team effort. “It’s nice when everybody contributes,” he said. “We responded to the challenge.” The game started went back and forth before Iowa’s Jarrid Famous hit a jumper to give the Energy (7-24) a 20-18 lead with 4:35 remaining in the quarter. Iowa increased their lead to 11 at 59-48 in the first half following a 3-pointer from Robert Hite with 2:32 remaining in the second quarter. Sioux Falls closed within four following a 9-2 run as the Energy held a 61-57 halftime lead. The Skyforce outscored Iowa 31-26 in the third quarter, taking an 88-87 lead into the fourth. Iowa scored seven of the first nine points in the fourth to take a 94-90 lead with 9:19 remaining. The lead would be the last of the game for Iowa as Nichols scored eight of the game’s next 15 points to put the Skyforce up for good at 104-95 with 4:44 remaining. The Energy outscored Sioux Falls 17-13 the rest of the way as the Force held on for a five-point win. Energy coach Bruce Wilson said his team, who had five players score in double figures led by Chris Wright’s 25 points, fought hard in the loss. “I was really happy with the way we played offense,” he said. “That’s what we’re kind of all about is just kind of spreading out a little bit and getting some guys going out there.” The Skyforce (20-12), who sit just a half-game behind Central Division leader Rio Grande Valley, will next be in action this weekend hosting the Tulsa 66ers on Friday and Saturday night.
