Regular Season Round 117: Denver N. - Oklah.City T. 105-103

Date: March 1, 2013
They have a closer. Tywon Ronell Lawson hit the big shot — unflappably, Jimmy Chitwood-style — a jumper with 0.2 seconds left, giving the Nuggets their biggest win of the season, a 105-103 thriller against the Thunder. When it went through the rim, the crowds erupted and Lawson wobbled his body, seemingly a version of the dance called "The Bernie." And now, how about this — it's March and the Nuggets are still undefeated at home against playoff teams from the Western Conference. Overall, the Nuggets are 25-3 at home, with losses to the Heat, Timberwolves and Wizards. Lawson, the hottest Nugget in the past two months, actually only had 11 points, but made the big two. The two teams had split the season series entering Friday, with the Thunder smacking around the Nuggets on Jan. 16, but Denver valiantly winning in overtime four nights later. With 9:32 still remaining in the first quarter, Denver coach George Karl yanked Kenneth Faried, who had made a turnover and took an ill-advised 17-footer. In from the bullpen came Wilson Chandler, who suddenly went all "Durant-y" (not to be confused with a silly singing comedian who went all "Durante"). Chandler calmly hit two 3s, complementing the calm with a lane storming for layups. By halftime, Chandler had 18 points in 18 minutes. He finished with 35 in 35, including 6-for-7 from 3-point range. He also scored a powerful bucket with 22.4 seconds left, when he banged his body against Serge Ibaka for a tough lay-in, giving Denver a 103-101 lead — and Chandler a career-high 35. Coincidentally, Karl was asked about Chandler before the game, and he acknowledged that Chandler wasn't necessarily happy with his 21.7 minutes per game. "I think Wilson wants 30 minutes a game and I think I can probably give him between 20 and 25 every night," Karl said, "but I don't think I can find him 25 to 30 every night. I think the five or six games that (Danilo Gallinari) missed has helped him get his confidence to a good level. So, I'm going to play the guys I can win with, and the thing about this team is it's competitive every night for minutes." The evening, of course, marked the anticipated return of Russell Westbrook, he who left Denver starving for queso. The Thunder guard twice blocked the fun halfcourt shot of Denver's SuperMascot Rocky on Jan. 20, the second time, throwing the ball into the stands (if the shot had dropped, fans would've received chips and queso from Qdoba). In the pregame locker room, Westbrook, forever curt, didn't play along when asked about his return to the site of the shenanigans. Amid boos early on in the first quarter, Westbrook was resplendent, thriving among hate like a villain is wont to do. And when he hit a 36-footer at the halftime buzzer, he trotted off to the locker room with a game-high 23 points. He finished with 38 — in the loss. Courtesy of: denverpost.com
