Regular Season Round 120: Cleveland C. - New York K. 97-102
Date: March 4, 2013
The Cleveland Cavaliers went from sizzle to fizzle in the span of 24 minutes. The Cavaliers blew a 22 point first half lead and lost 102-97 to the New York Knicks Monday night at Quicken Loans Arena. The win was the first for the Knicks in Cleveland since Nov. 2006 and ended a 10 game losing streak at the Q. Kyrie Irving, who returned from a hyperextended right knee injury after missing 3 games, finished with 22 points and 6 assists but his desperation 3 in the closing seconds was deflected by Tyson Chandler to complete the comeback for New York. But the game wasn’t decided on his final attempt to force overtime. “Our lack of intensity going into the third quarter at the start of it,” Irving said. “They got easy baskets then next thing you know we’re in a tie game. “It could’ve been avoided had we kept the lead and kept our intensity up.” Cleveland made 26-of-38 shots from the floor in the first half but were just 11-of-35 in the 2nd half in dropping their second straight game. “We relaxed,” head coach Byron Scott said. “I thought we relaxed in the 2nd quarter and the 3rd quarter we came out the wrong way. I didn’t think we came out with that aggressive mindset again to try to build that lead back up. “The again you’re playing against a very good basketball team that has a lot of veterans who know how to play.” Earlier this season the Cavaliers blew a 26 point advantage and lost to the Phoenix Suns 107-105 on Nov. 9. Amare Stoudemire scored 22 points off the bench and J.R. Smith added 17 in the win for New York. Marreese Speights and the Cavaliers, who shot 73.5 percent to race out to a to a 34-24 lead after 1, were on fire in the first half. Speights started in place of rookie center Tyler Zeller, who was out along with rookie guard Dion Waiters due to an illness, and hit his first 10 shots scoring 21 of his 23 points in the first 24 minutes. Cleveland continued the hot shooting in the second quarter to take a 52-30 lead after hitting 18 of 19 shots to raise the shooting percentage to an incredible 81.5 percent before cooling off to 68.4 percent from the floor at halftime. Carmello Anthony tripped over his own 2 feet at midcourt after catching a pass and left the game with a right knee injury with 6:51 minutes to play in the first half. He did not return and finished with 6 points while the Knicks finished the game by outscoring the Cavaliers 72-45. The Knicks’ comeback began right before halftime as they cut Cleveland’s lead to 12 at intermission with a 19-9 run. The Cavaliers started the second half 0-9 from the floor before Luke Walton found Alonzo Gee for a dunk and a 64-61 advantage. Walton finished with a career-high 12 assists but it was just 1 of 5 dimes that the Cavaliers had in the 2nd half after racking up 20 in the 1st half. “In the 2nd half we didn’t do that,” Scott said. “It was pass and everybody’s standing around. We just didn’t get back into that flow or really trying to make them work defensively.” A 34-12 New York run wiped out the 22 point lead and tied the game at 64 with 3:45 to play in the 3rd. “We’re not that good yet to be able to turn that switch on and off,” C.J. Miles, who scored 11 off the bench, said. “We’ve got to play that way all the time. We’ve got to play hard all the time. There’s talent on the team, but there’s not enough years to go with the talent. You live and learn, but we should have learned by now.” Despite making just 4 shots in the 3rd quarter, the Cavaliers went to the 4th leading 74-70 before it started raining 3's. The Knicks hit 7 of them in the final 12 minutes. Steve Novak’s 3 pointer put the Knicks in front 79-78 – their first lead since a 16-13 advantage in the first. Courtesy of: cleveland.cbslocal.com
