Regular Season Round 53: Sioux Falls S. - Idaho S. 102-109
Date: March 5, 2013
The Skyforce blew a game they had to have Tuesday night at the Arena, falling apart in the fourth quarter to drop a 109-102 decision to Idaho in front of 2,535 fans at the Arena. Sioux Falls entered the game with a somewhat tenuous grip on an NBADL playoff spot after back-to-back losses, but the Stampede figured to be a welcome chance to get healthy, as they entered the game with the second-worst record in the league. For most of the first three quarters, Sioux Falls (21-17) looked poised to cruise to the win, taking a 58-47 lead at half and pushing the advantage as high as 18 before the Stampede (12-24) got it back to 11 by the end of the third. Idaho then dominated the final stanza, outscoring the Force 37-19 to stun the crowd into silence. A Coby Karl bucket gave Idaho a 102-100 lead with about a minute to play, and seconds later he would add a 3 to make it 105-100. After James Mays was stuffed in the lane, the Stampede closed it out at the line. “Very frustrating,” said Skyforce coach Joel Abelson in a post-game interview that lasted 49 seconds. “We didn’t make shots and they made some tough shots. Sometimes that’s the way it goes.” Karl and Justin Harper had 18 points each to lead the Stampede, who turned the ball over 19 times in the first half but just five the rest of the way. They also hit 12-of-21 shots in the fourth quarter, while the Force were just 7-for-19. “To come back from that far down against a team as good as Sioux Falls — in their place — I think that say a lot about our guys in terms of their fight and their will,” said Idaho coach Michael Peck, who previously coached at national high school powerhouse Findlay-Prep in Las Vegas. “We really earned it, too. When you’re behind by that much, you can shoot 100 percent but that’s not enough. You have to get stops, too, and we did that.” Justin Holiday had 16 points for the Stampede, while Durrell Summers added 15. Demetris Nichols had 26 points for the Skyforce, while Damian Saunders had 23 points and eight boards. Andre Barrett had 16 points and 15 assists, but Abelson said that the flurry of transactions the team has made of late is making it hard for the team to get on the same page. “We’re still trying to learning each other,” said Abelson, who was formerly an Idaho assistant. “We’ll keep working and learning and trying to gel as a group.” But with their grip on a playoff berth slipping and the team about to head out on a four-game road trip, there isn’t much time for them to do it. “For sure, it needs to (happen) on Friday,” Abelson said. “We need to turn it around (at Santa Cruz). To get outscored 37-19 in the fourth quarter on your home floor is unacceptable.” Courtesy of: argusleader.com
