Regular Season Round 123: New York K. - Oklah.City T. 94-95
Date: March 7, 2013
The performance said a lot about the Knicks heart and character but it also said something about their late game execution. The Knicks, playing their fourth game in five nights and without an injured Carmelo Anthony for the second straight game, lost 95-94 to Oklahoma City after J.R. Smith missed a fade away jumper at the buzzer. Smith had his best game of the season, scoring 36 points on 14 for 29 shooting but he made just two of nine shots in the final period as Mike Woodson twice elected not to put the ball in Amar’e Stoudemire’s hands with the Knicks trailing by one in the final 40 seconds. The Knicks went scoreless in the final 1:50 and fell to 37-22 overall and 4-5 without Anthony in the lineup. Stoudemire finished with 16 points on 5-for-16 shooting and Raymond Felton added 16 points. Kevin Durant scored 36, Russell Westbrook 21 and Kevin Martin 16 as the Thunder improved to 45-16. Anthony missed his second straight game with a sore knee. Woodson, who has described Anthony’s condition as “fluid build-up”, said on Thursday’s that Anthony is still listed as day-to-day. The Knicks play again Saturday against Utah before heading to the West Coast for five games including Anthony’s first game back in Denver since the trade two years ago. “I’m not overly concerned,” Woodson said. Of course, in October the Knicks said they weren’t concerned when Stoudemire suffered what was called a sore knee. Within weeks he underwent surgery and didn’t make his season debut until Jan. 1. Also, Rasheed Wallace was labeled as day-to-day for two months before having foot surgery last week. “Let’s not hope (its long term),” Woodson added. “I think he’s going to be fine. Only the doctors know best. Right now he’s day-to-day.” The Knicks needed to make up for Anthony’s scoring especially after OKC opened up an 11-point second quarter. Smith’s 18 points helped close the deficit to 59-56 by halftime and with Smith scoring 13 in the third quarter the Knicks built a six-point lead. More importantly, the Knicks were roughing up the Thunder. Durant and Westbrook took several hard fouls as they drove to the basket with Kenyon Martin doing a lot of the damage. Westbrook scored 19 first-half points but was erratic all game starting with a blown breakaway lay-up in the opening seconds. Westbrook’s play in the third quarter was at times mindless as he missed five of six shots and committed three turnovers. His carelessness and Smith’s shooting changed the tenor of the game and energized the crowd. Scott Brooks, the OKC coach and former Knicks reserve guard, had Westbrook on the bench to open the fourth and over the first six minutes Durant led the Thunder on a 12-4 run. Stoudemire sat the first five minutes of the period and made an immediate impact, drawing a shooting foul and tying the game at 87. Serge Ibaka’s dunk put the Thunder ahead but Jason Kidd set up Smith for an open three. Although the Knicks had missed their first six from behind the arc, Smith buried his shot and gave the Knicks the lead at 90-89 with 4:30 to play. After Durant and Raymond Felton traded baskets, Smith forced a jumper over Thabo Sefolosha that rimmed out. Westbrook wisely found Durant, who drove to the basket and drew a foul on Stoudemire. Woodson had replaced Chandler with Stoudemire with 6:37 left and the Knicks more than held their own. Even after Stoudemire went to the foul line with 1:50 to play and gave the Knicks a 94-93 lead, Woodson substituted Martin for defense but he immediately fouled out while guarding Durant. Durant’s free throws with 1:38 gave the Thunder the lead and OKC regained possession when Felton lost his dribble. This time, Woodson substituted Chandler for Stoudemire and the Knicks, despite giving up the rebound on Durant’s miss, grabbed Westbrook’s errant shot with 42 seconds left. Woodson called time out and instead of playing through Stoudemire, Smith launched a three that didn’t have a chance. The Thunder got the match-up they wanted; Durant on Kidd late in the shot clock. Durant, who made just 3 of 8 shots in the quarter, missed a pull-up and the Knicks called their final time out with 7.9 seconds left. Again, Woodson ran a play for Smith, who couldn’t find the range with Westbrook providing solid defense. Courtesy of: nydailynews.com
