Regular Season Round 126: Oklah.City T. - Boston C. 91-79

Date: March 10, 2013
OKLAHOMA CITY — The Celtics saw their winning streak end at five games with a 91-79 loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder this afternoon. The C’s fell to 2-9 on the road against the Western Conference, and it was hard to expect much else against the team with the third best record in the league. Kevin Durant led the Thunder with 23, while Paul Pierce had 20 to top the visitors. . The Celts hung in as long as they could, but when they missed their first nine shots from the floor to open the fourth quarter, a close game (68-65) quickly turned into the Thunder’s largest lead of the day to that point (12). Boston College product Reggie Jackson had six points in an 11-2 run that made it 79-67, a burst interrupted only by two Pierce free throws. The C’s made just two of their first 18 shots in the quarter as the Thunder went ahead by 14. Oklahoma City held the Celtics to just 25 percent shooting in the second half. "We were bad all game offensively," coach Doc Rivers said. "We were forcing things and offensively the ball stuck at times. Their length bothered us at times. Sometimes you want to win too bad, and that was us today." Two Jason Terry 3-pointers gave the Celts a bit of life, down by a manageable eight points. But with just two minutes left against the defending NBA Finalist, chances were less than slim. The Celtics turned the ball over 18 times and also had to live through a 5-for-19 shooting performance from Kevin Garnett. All of this despite doing a decent job on the boards against the Thunder. The Celtics won the rebound battle, 44-41, including — incredibly — a 10-3 advantage on the offensive glass. Brandon Bass did a nice job on that front with 13 boards, five of them off the offensive glass. But the Celtics just couldn’t connect from the field. After shooting 51 percent in the first half, the C's finished at just 37.5 percent from the field for the game. The Thunder also dominated where they normally dominate — at the free throw line. OKC went 27-for-33 from the line, including 11-for-11 for Durant. The Celtics shot just 14-of-20 from the charity stripe. That’s a tough deficit to overcome. "We're showing that we can compete against pretty much anyone, but we have to bring our A-game most of the time, and that involves not turning the ball over and not fouling as much," said Pierce, who needs 10 points to pass Charles Barkley for 20th on the NBA's career scoring list. Still, the Celts, though hanging by a thread for much of the game, trailed just 68-65 after three. Oklahoma City was ahead by nine with a little more than three minutes left in the third, but the Celts scored the last six points to tighten things up. And it would have been even closer had they not missed two of their six free throws in the stretch. The spurt was highlighted by Jeff Green’s right baseline drive and reverse dunk. The Celtics were down just 50-45 at the half, but they had to be a bit encouraged. They were that close despite committing 13 first-half turnovers and allowing the Thunder 15 points from them. The Celts got two inside hoops from Garnett and were still down just one when the Thunder ripped off their second 10-0 run of the game. Derek Fisher had six of the points, hitting a trey and getting fouled by Terry while hitting a two-point jumper (he converted the free throw). Pierce got the C’s back with a 3-pointer and two drives, and he had another point as his team closed out the half with an 8-2 run — just as they had in the previous quarter.
