Regular Season Round 35: Windsor Exp. - St.John M.R. 104-95

Date: March 15, 2013
Darren Duncan spun around a defender, went to the hoop for the layup and missed. Undaunted, the Windsor Express guard corralled his own rebound, put back the layup the second time around and for good measure, drew the harm, completing the three-point play from the free-throw line a few moments later. The basket that basically cemented the third seed in the National Basketball League of Canada playoffs for the Express also represented an epitome of their inaugural campaign. If at first you don't succeed, never give up. Keep working, keep trying, and you will be rewarded. "That's the way it's supposed to be," Windsor forward Kevin Loiselle said after a 104-95 victory over the Saint John Mill Rats at the WFCU Centre wasn't nearly as easily acquired as the final score would indicate. "We knew what was at stake," Windsor guard Stefan Bonneau said. "That fourth quarter, we knew we had to give it our all to get this game." Bonneau helped deliver the goods. Coming off the bench to score 15 points, he poured in 11 of them in the final period as Windsor rallied from a 76-73 deficit. "I think any player wants the ball at the end of the game, but I think my teammates and coach saw that I was hot and I was fortunate enough to knock everything down," Bonneau said. "It feels great. We wanted to get as high a seed as we could. I'd say it was important (to finish third)." The theory that the journey is more important than the destination was severely tested by a Jekyll-Hyde performance from the Express. You could say that this contest was a microcosm of the Express season. "The start of the game was like that first game at home - a lot of adrenaline, we're all pumped up," said Windsor forward Greg Surmacz, one of six Express players in double digits, scoring 12 points. "And then slowly we start going down, we can't find our way. "Then towards the fourth quarter, we finally got it together and won, just like we've won 12 of the last 14. "It was symbolic. There were ups and downs, but we fought through them and we're in a position now to compete for a championship." Getting there in proper order was as equally important to the Express as was getting there. Even if the 21-18 Express lost Friday to the 20-20 Mill Rats, a win tonight over Oshawa in their final regular-season game would have earned Windsor the third seed regardless, but that wasn't how they wanted to go about their business. "It's better to do it the right way," Windsor coach Bill Jones said. "They were the team that was battling against us (for third) and we went out there and beat them." You knew it was serious business in the fourth quarter when Jones doffed his sports coat while prowling the sideline, doing everything but roll up his sleeves to indicate to his team that it was time to get down to work. "You let the guys go and play, but when you don't see that intensity, they draw energy from me, so I ended up having to take the jacket off and give them a few choice words to get them to play," Jones said. Windsor rediscovered the edge that garnered them a 13-point first-half advantage and regained control. The Express will face the second-seeded Summerside Storm in a best-of-five semifinal. "You've just got to regroup, get back out there and go hard," 17-point scorer Loiselle said. That's been the blueprint for the Express all year and Friday, they kept the train on track.
