Regular Season Round 133: Brooklyn N. - Atlanta H. 93-105

Date: March 17, 2013
NEW YORK — The Nets have been downplaying the questions for days. With a win Sunday, Brooklyn would have caught the slumping Knicks, and pulled into a virtual tie with their crosstown rivals atop the Atlantic Division. Before the game, interim coach P.J. Carlesimo dismissed that story line, calling it “meaningless.” But then the Nets lost to Atlanta, 105-93. Only then, once the opportunity had been squandered, did the truth begin to come out. And it came directly from the team’s two best players. “This was a huge game for us,” said Deron Williams, who had 18 points. “And [Atlanta] played like it was and we really didn’t. It’s a big missed opportunity, especially with the Knicks losing [Sunday].” “I’m very conscious of it, that’s why it hurts so bad,” said Joe Johnson (18 points) of the opportunity to catch the Knicks. “We’ve positioned ourselves to move up in the standings and do something special, and we couldn’t do that tonight with the way we played.” Specifically, it was the way they played in the fourth quarter that torpedoed the Nets’ chances and ruined their final home game until April — with the circus moving into Barclays Center, the Nets begin an eight-game road trip tonight in Detroit. The Nets held a 73-71 lead going into the fourth. But a 25-10 Atlanta run to start the final quarter put the game, and the division, for now, out of reach. On March 3, exactly two weeks before Sunday’s game, the Nets trailed the Knicks by three games in the standings and five in the loss column. But with New York in a nosedive — the Knicks fell to the Clippers on Sunday, dropping their fifth game in six tries — a win Sunday night would have pulled the Nets alongside the Knicks. Carlesimo was less than impressed with that scenario — which would have given the Nets one more win and one more loss than the Knicks and pulled Brooklyn within three one-hundredths of a percentage point of the division lead — and downplayed it before the game, vigorously. “I don’t know how you guys come up with this nonsense,” Carlesimo said. “We’re not tied with them when they have one less loss. I don’t care what the numbers say. You can’t be tied with somebody when they have one less loss than they do.” Carlesimo paused for a moment, then muttered: “meaningless.” Apparently, Nets CEO Brett Yormark didn’t share Carlesimo’s assessment, or his method of calculating the division standings. Minutes after Carlesimo finished addressing reporters before the game, Yormark sent out a message via Twitter. “Excited about [tonight’s Nets’] game,” Yormark’s tweet read. “Chance to be tied for division lead.” Perhaps Carlesimo is more worried about the tenuous schedule ahead. The Nets won’t play another home game until April 4, as they embark on a trip that includes three back-to-backs and tough games against Dallas (Wednesday), the Clippers (Saturday), Denver (March 29) and Utah (March 30). It’s a trip that could have started a lot differently for the Nets, in the standings and in their minds. The truth was evident, in their words and on their faces. “It would have been a good step,” Williams said of the win that slipped away, “a good confidence builder to get us going through the road trip.” Instead, it was squandered with a fourth-quarter collapse.
