Regular Season Round 136: New York K. - Orlando M. 106-94

Date: March 20, 2013
The Knicks beat a team they should tonight, which was a relief following that harrowing five-game west-coast road trip. But the real reprieve of the team's recent woes was the sight of Carmelo Anthony back in the starting lineup. The All-Star forward returned to the court after missing three-straight games and not having played a complete contest since March 11 in Golden State. But Anthony looked sharp tonight in registering a smooth 21 points in the Knicks' 106-94 win over the hapless Orlando Magic (18-51). The game itself lacked any real drama, as the Knicks (40-26) led wire-to-wire for the fifth time all season. The real trepidation for the Garden faithful certainly had to be the sight of their best player in uniform for the first time at home since a March 3 loss to the Miami Heat. But he didn't disappoint as he shot 7-of-14, including 3-of-5 in 3-pointers in 33 minutes. Only J.R. Smith logged more minutes (37:41), as Anthony showed no ill effects from his troubled right knee and suspect hamstring. The Knicks as a team needed an immediate remedy following their ill-fated west coast trip, but more than anything else, head coach Mike Woodson needed to see if his superstar forward would resemble anything close to the guy who was once in the MVP mix. Anthony was, and the Knicks soared to the easy win. Anthony spoke about his first game back, saying he was "relieved" about his effort against the Magic, adding that tonight was the best he's felt "since right before the All-Star break." The Knicks will certainly need their star to regain and sustain his all-star level, especially since the team is missing four of their top big men in Tyson Chandler, Amar'e Stoudemire, Kurt Thomas, and Rasheed Wallace. The 6-foot-7 Anthony also reprised his role as the starting power forward with aplomb, as he grabbed a team-high eight rebounds. This version of Anthony was a great shot of adrenaline in the arm of the squad, as the Knicks looked spry on offense and frisky on defense. And perhaps more important than the efforts of Anthony and his teammates was the fact that the Knicks maintained their one-game lead in the Atlantic Division over the Brooklyn Nets, who won handily in Dallas over the Mavericks, tonight. Woodson was more than happy to talk about the return of the team's hero. But in the same breath he simply shrugged his shoulders when asked about their slimming division lead -- a lead they've had wire-to-wire so far. Brooklyn still remains a game out of first. "Melo was Melo. He was great, [and] the supporting cast was great," said Woodson, switching gears to the tight divisional race. "We have to be consistent with winning at home, and .500 or better on the road, to win the division. We can’t beg for help. No looking over our shoulders or wanting and needing help for someone to lose.” Courtesy of: https://www.nj.com
