Regular Season Round 139: New York K. - Toronto R. 110-84
Date: March 23, 2013
The night began with a decidedly lighthearted mood, Chris Copeland, the Knicks’ rookie who just turned 29 last week, taking a microphone at center court, imploring the crowd to wish Jason Kidd a happy 40th birthday and then crooning a not-ready-for-prime-time version of “Happy Birthday”. For the Knicks, desperate for wins after a dismal road trip and mounting injuries, the effort and demeanor turned harsh quickly. Actually, they were pretty harsh with their assessment of Copeland’s performance with Kidd some comparing it to Bruce Springsteen, but Carmelo Anthony calling it, “Awful.” But once the game started, the Knicks really got serious. With Kenyon Martin soaring above the rim and inciting the Madison Square Garden with unsavory screams and Carmelo Anthony drawing a flagrant foul, the Knicks took a 110-84 decision over the Raptors, sweeping both ends of the home-and-home set of this simmering rivalry. The tension was defused as the game turned into a blowout, sending Anthony and Martin to an early breather on the bench. Anthony, after playing 43 minutes Friday night, was given the lighter load Saturday as he scored 28 points in 30 minutes over the first three quarters and then sat out the entire final period. The lead served to preserve Anthony, allowing him to rest up as he tries to head to the postseason healthy after struggling for nearly a month with fluid on his right knee. But if his minutes were reduced, his intensity wasn’t. The confrontation played out directly in front of the officials as Landry Fields dropped a shoulder into the chest of Anthony, who argued for a call momentarily, until Fields started to cut by him and Anthony shoved Fields almost directly into the official. Fields chalked it up to the heat of the moment and Anthony agreed, insisting, “It was just a reaction, man. It still hurts.” “There was contact there,” said Mike Woodson, who took up the argument for Anthony with the officials. “The guy just lowers a shoulder and kind of goes through your chest a little bit, I’d get a little heated, too.’’ While the flagrant foul on Anthony was easy to understand, the roots of the play are almost as simple to trace. Knicks teammates until this summer, Fields and Anthony were still on different sides — according to those in the locker room cordial enough, but clearly of a different mind what direction the team would go. Fields departed as a free agent — along with his pal, Jeremy Lin, with Anthony getting blamed for the exit. The Raptors have started him in every game against the Knicks, assigning him the task of stopping Anthony. The results haven’t been great of late with Anthony scoring 37 Friday and adding nearly a point per minute played Saturday. It wasn’t Anthony, but instead Martin who was firing up the Knicks and the Madison Square Garden crowd for much of the night. Seeming to grow closer to his old form every night, Martin had the fanschanting his name as he threw down an assortment of dunks off missed shots and lobs and then thunderously swatted a John Lucas III shot. Martin finished with 18 points, seven rebounds and two blocked shots in 27 minutes, only the fourth quarter on the bench likely keeping him from a second straight double-double. “He’s doing a little bit of everything for us,” Woodson said. “Major plus for our ballclub, I’ll tell you that.” The final excitement for the crowd came with 9:35 left when Kidd lined up a three-pointer from the corner and drained it for his only points of the night. Points have never been the thing for Kidd, but it got him an ovation from the crowd - a better sound than Copeland’s singing. Asked if he got him anything for his birthday, Knicks coach Mike Woodson said, “Nothing. I mean, Jason, he’s been in this league long enough he doesn’t need anything. He’s probably got a little of everything he needs. I don’t know what you get him. I just shook his hand and said, ‘Happy Birthday,’ to him.” Courtesy of: northjersey.com
