Regular Season Round 64: Austin T. - Iowa E. 99-94
Date: March 24, 2013
The Austin Toros stayed firmly in the NBA D-League playoff picture with six games left by beating the Iowa Energy 99-94 Sunday at Cedar Park Center. Austin, which is third in the Central Division but sitting sixth for the eight-team playoffs, swept the season series with Iowa 6-0. “All of the games we’ve played against Iowa have been very physical and down to the wire,” Austin coach Taylor Jenkins said. “They fought us every game, and our guys were able to find ways to win six games against this team, which is a tough task against any team in this league.” The Toros led by as many as 16 and kept a comfortable margin for much of the game until midway through the fourth quarter, when the Energy cut the lead to 83-82 on an Alex Ruoff layup with 6 minutes, 30 seconds remaining. On the Toros’ next possession, San Antonio Spurs assignee Aron Baynes had a putback dunk off Chris Roberts’ missed shot, sparking a 6-0 run. Baynes had 19 points and 14 rebounds. “I just saw an open lane down to the rim,” he said. “No one put a body on me, so I decided I would go in and see if I could make the most of it. It was a lucky bounce, and I was just able to go up and get it.” Six Toros finished in double figures, and everyone who played for Austin had at least seven points. “Everybody wants to get in the game; everybody wants to score; everybody wants to be a part of the win,” Tre Kelley said. “We’re just sharing the ball well and playing together.” Paul Harris had a game-high 31 points for Iowa to go with 11 rebounds. Ryan Ayers hit a wide open 3-pointer with 15 seconds left in the first quarter to give the Toros a 28-20 lead, their biggest of the quarter. Austin committed seven of its 25 turnovers in the first quarter but out-rebounded the Energy 15-6. Iowa made a push in the second quarter to get back into it, cutting the lead to 51-49, but the Toros went on a 5-0 run to close out the half, capped by Lester Hudson’s 3-pointer with three seconds left. The Toros did not trail the rest of the game. Austin’s next game is against the Sioux Falls Skyforce at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at Cedar Park Center. Courtesy of: statesman.com
