Regular Season Round 143: Charlotte B. - Orlando M. 114-108

Date: March 27, 2013
The Magic lost the game but gained some ground. Whaaaat? The Charlotte Bobcats defeated the Magic 114-108 on Wednesday night in a game that had lottery implications. The Magic (18-53) actually gained a game against the Bobcats (17-54) in the race for the NBA's worst record and the best odds at nabbing the top draft pick. Nothing else was at stake. Charlotte entered the night with the NBA's worst record and Orlando had the second-worst — and they showed their records weren't a fluke. Most of it was unwatchable at Time Warner Cable Arena, a fast-paced scrimmage with so little defense that both teams shot over 50 percent and virtual lay-up lines that produced 114 points in the paint (62 by Orlando). Playing without starting center Nik Vucevic (concussion) and back-up power forward Andrew Nicholson (ankle), the Magic rushed to a 19-point first-quarter lead, but couldn't hold off the 'Cats. "They got out in transition and we were looking at the scoreboard admiring the lead we had," Coach Jacque Vaughn said. The Magic surrendered 34-point nights to point guard Kemba Walker and shooting guard Gerald Henderson. Walker had 10 and Henderson eight in the final quarter, scoring 18 of Charlotte's 31 points. Former Magic forward Josh McRoberts completed an alley-oop dunk to make it 112-106, an exclamation point with 17 seconds left. Orlando might want to consider drafting somebody who can play defense. Typical of the night, the Magic gave up an uncontested lay-up to Henderson that tied the game at 102. They then surrendered up a dunk to Bismack Biyombo, handing the Bobcats a 108-106 lead with two-and-a half minutes remaining. Charlotte never trailed again as Orlando scored on just one of its last six possessions and had two turnovers. The Bobcats roared back with a nearly identical run after the opening quarter, outscoring the Magic 31-19 in the second period. "We let them go on a little run," Maurice Harkless said. "Our mistakes on defense gave them some confidence. We let up. We can't do that." Charlotte roared back with a nearly identical run, outscoring the Magic 31-19 in the second period. It was as if the teams were equally as bad. If the bigger picture for these doormats is player development, the Magic continued to see Harris, Harkless and rookie Kyle O'Quinn make strides. Harris led the club with 29 points on 10-of-20 shooting, adding nine rebounds and six assists. Harkless 18 points, hitting 7-of-12 shots, and DeQuan Jones added 13. O'Quinn, a second-round pick from Norfolk State, did a nice impression of Vucevic. He finished with 23 points, a career high. 11 rebounds and six assists, scoring scored 10 of Orlando's first 24 points. O'Quinn showed nice range on some jump shots and opened eyes with several nifty passes, even if his handiwork came against the hapless Bobcats. Judging by the youth in the starting lineups, you had to wonder if this wasn't an NCAA play-in game. The Magic started Jones at shooting guard, giving them three rookies in the lineup (Jones, O'Quinn and Harkless), plus second-year forward Tobias Harris. Jameer Nelson, 30, must have felt like it was senior night. "A Diaper Dandy game," said the Magic's colorful radio analyst Richie Adubato. Harris, Harkless, O'Quinn and Nelson all played more than 40 minutes as Vaughn used only eight players. Forwards Al Harrington and Hedo Turkoglu — who was eligible after serving a 20-game suspension for violating the league's steroid policy — watched from the bench. Perhaps their veteran presence might have made a difference on the floor, but then they also might have cost them in their drive to lose enough to win the Lottery Bowl.
