Regular Season Round 146: Dallas M. - Chicago B. 100-98

Date: March 30, 2013
Jimmy Butler slumped into his locker stall Saturday evening, ruing the two free throws he missed with 15.9 seconds left in the Bulls' stunning collapse against the Mavericks. "I don't care what anybody says. That's the reason we lost this game," Butler said. "I couldn't care less what my teammates say. I know better. This one is on me without a doubt. And that's that." Butler's impressive attempt at accountability aside, countless events played into the Mavericks' 100-98 victory, which they closed with a 15-1 run after Luol Deng sank one of the Bulls' season-high 12 3-pointers with 4 minutes, 8 seconds remaining. The biggest came when Dirk Nowitzki buried the game-winning 3-pointer with 2.9 seconds left, capping his 15-point fourth quarter and season-high 35 points. Nate Robinson slipped while guarding Vince Carter on a drive, causing Deng to help and give Nowitzki the space he needed for his patented high release. "We had a slip and were in a scramble," coach Tom Thibodeau said. "I thought there may have been a travel there but that's the way it goes." Robinson, who tied Deng and Carlos Boozer for team-high honors with 25 points, then missed a 22-foot fadeaway from directly in front of the Mavericks' bench at the buzzer. The Bulls, playing without four injured rotation players again, trudged off the American Airlines Center court. Robinson sank all seven of his 3-point attempts and scored 14 fourth-quarter points, including 11 straight as the Bulls appeared to take command. But the outside shooting barrage came at a price: Boozer, who had scored 18 first-half points, didn't attempt a fourth-quarter field goal despite being matched up often against the less physical Shawn Marion. "That's how we were getting the 3s, the help (on Boozer)," Thibodeau said. "I thought we had high percentage ones. As long as they're the right ones and it's going inside and out, you live with that. "I thought we missed a lot of layups down the stretch and free throws. We fouled 94 feet away from the basket in the penalty. Those are things we have to correct." After three straight missed long jumpers — two of them 3-pointers — and two turnovers, Butler did drive but missed and Boozer fouled former Bulls guard Mike James on the rebound with 87 seconds left and the Bulls up six. But James only split the two free throws. After Deng missed on another drive in which he pleaded for a foul, Nowitzki buried a 3-pointer with 53.9 seconds left. Another Bulls' drive came up empty with Robinson missing, but Boozer rebounded and got fouled. But he only split his two free throws as the Bulls went just 10-for-18 from the line. Nowitzki buried a step-back jumper over Butler with 27.8 seconds left to cut the Mavericks' deficit to one. "He's a great (expletive) player," Butler said. "He hit a lot of big shots — contested, off-balance, off one leg. He's so hard to guard." Carter then fouled Butler, setting up the fatal finish. "I'm not going to say I was nervous because I was very confident," Butler said of his moment. "I'm supposed to be a good free-throw shooter." Just like the Bulls are supposed to close out games.
